Things To Do the First Night in Your New Home

Moving Unpack First Box

Congratulations! Your move is over. But, now what? You’re probably exhausted from a long day (or several days) of moving. Boxes are piled in every room and you have no idea where the toilet paper is. All you want to do is shower, order a pizza and sleep. Here’s a must-do list for the perfect first night and morning in your new home.

Hopefully, you’ve created an “unpack first” box. If not, no problem! Here are some things you’ll want to locate and set up right away.

Stock the bathroom

You’ll want toilet paper, soap, and paper or regular towels in the bathroom. When nature calls, you don’t want to be scrambling to find the right “tools” for the job. While you’re in the bathroom, it might be a good time to hang up your shower curtain and stock the shower with soap, shampoo, and conditioner, as well as any other items you regularly use before bed.

Set up the bed

Speaking of bed … while you still have some energy, now is the time to set up your bed. If you have to assemble the bed and it’s getting late, just make up the mattress on the floor. You can assemble the bed when you have more energy (read: patience).

Lay out fresh clothes

After you shower, you’re going to want to put on some clean pajamas. Or, you may sleep nude. No judgments! But, you’re definitely going to want something fresh to wear tomorrow. Laying out your clothes for the night and morning will prevent a stressful search later.

Order food

If you haven’t ordered food already, now is a great time to spring for delivery. If you’ve moved to an unfamiliar area, search online or use an app like Yelp to locate restaurants that deliver near your new home.

Get hooked up

No, I’m not talking about Tinder. While you’re waiting on your grub to arrive, if you’ve already transferred your service, use the time to connect your new home to the Internet and cable/satellite. If not, you can still hook up your TV and DVD/Blue-ray player, locate your movie collection and pick out something to watch while you eat.

Bonus: Line up breakfast

Maybe you’ve got some leftover moving day snacks to munch on in the morning. But, do you have coffee? Before you go to bed, search for a nearby coffee shop or breakfast joint, or find your must-have breakfast supplies and set them out. After all that heavy lifting, your stomach is going to be growling in the morning!
