Shared-use services

Storage facilities

Corporate citizenship is U-Haul Company’s commitment to being accountable to the communities in which we live and serve. Today, many cities and towns face increased challenges in developing affordable housing to improve livability and foster community connection. With nearly 1,100 self-storage facilities conveniently located in North American communities, U-Haul storage-sharing strategy is an innovative solution to shared-living communities, providing shared spaces which enable local residents to live comfortably in more compact space with substantially reduced living expenses. A latest in storage-sharing initiatives, U-Haul Storage Reuse Centers in every U-Haul storage facility have been developed to provide a redistribution network for gently used household goods, materials, furniture, sporting equipment, bikes and clothing that were formerly destined for landfills. These storage-sharing initiatives are serving the needs of people of varying incomes, in not only providing tangible shared facilities but also building intangible neighborhood connections, such as a sense of community and a feeling of support and respect.

Storage Re-use Program

The Storage Re-use Program was developed to provide a redistribution network for gently used household goods, materials, furniture, sporting equipment, bikes and clothing that were formerly destined for landfills.

Reusing gives a second life to tons of household items, reduces carbon emission by reducing trips to the landfill and eliminates tons of solid waste deposited in landfills, while providing customers eco-friendly alternatives to purchasing these as new products. Items placed in the area are available for reuse, not resale, by the U-Haul community, including System members (employees).

U-Haul continues to support humanitarian, community-based organizations such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill and the like, by placing clothing-donation bins in close proximity to the designated reuse for customers to donate directly to these groups.

The Reuse Program is the first in the nation for self-storage facilities. This program provides U-Haul another opportunity to pioneer a system that will advance the self-storage industry as holding itself responsible for bettering the environment for generations to come. Its purpose benefits the U-Haul community, including System members, customers and dealers, while speaking directly to the reduce, reuse, recycle mantra of U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability Initiative.
