College Bound: Tips for Moving to Ole Miss

Apr 24, 2013

COLLEGE BOUND

Congratulations on deciding to attend the University of Mississippi, more commonly known as Ole Miss. The mascot here is the Rebel Black Bear and the school colors are Crimson and Yale Blue. Ole Miss is known for its beautiful campus and strong Greek life.

If you are preparing to move into the dorms (or a nearby apartment), then we’d like to share some special tips for your specific move.moving to ole miss

Dorms Open: August 17 to August 23
(dates vary by group- more details can be found here)
Classes Start: Aug 26

How you can avoid the chaos and save money:

Choose an Alternate Destination: Instead of returning your truck rental to the city of University, consider one of these nearby cities as an alternate destination:

  • Batesville
  • Water Valley
  • Tupelo

Make a Round Trip: If you live in a nearby city like Jackson, you can rent your truck there, take it to your dorm to unload, and then go back to Jackson to return it.  Avoiding the busy centers nearest the college will help you avoid a headache, and also likely save you some money.

Move in Early or Late: If you are moving to an apartment and have the option to move in early or late (2 weeks before of after move-in is ideal), then you can save a lot! These off-peak times tend to have lower rates due to better equipment availability. If you’re moving into a dorm, consider bringing only the bare essentials, then waiting a couple of weeks to go back and gather the rest of your furniture in the moving truck. Again, avoiding the peak of Ole Miss move-in will help you get a great deal. Further, i you can move mid-week instead of a weekend, and mid-month, you will be golden!

Before you pack: Keep in mind that you don’t need to bring everything. Find out what furniture your dorm or apartment will have, and bring just the items you will need. More on what to bring and what not to bring to college (courtesy of Ole Miss Student Housing)
