To start your college adventure off on the right foot, we’d like to share several tips for moving to the University of Wisconsin- Madison that will likely save you time, money, and stress.
Tip #1: Choose your moving day carefully. The residence halls at the University of Wisconsin don’t open until August 28th and 29th. But, if you’re moving to a nearby apartment, then you have a bit of leeway, and should use that to your advantage. The best times to move are the during the week, the weekend of the 24th and 25th, or after September 1st. Why? Each year, the streets of downtown Madison become occupied with thousands of residences trying to move over a several-hour period when leases turn over. Most downtown leases expire on the morning of the 14th, but new leases don’t begin until the 15th around noon. As a result, many downtown dwellers must transport or store their items for this time period. The rush of people needing trucks creates a shortage, and as a result, reserving a moving truck on these two days (and even for a week before or after) may be difficult.
Tip #2: Return in the City, even if you aren’t going there. If you’re moving to a suburb instead of the city, then you can still return your moving truck rental in downtown Madison. Doing so may save you money because some truck rental companies will offer a lower rate to have the truck returned to this central area. If it’s 30 minutes or less out of your way, compare the quotes- you may be pleasantly surprised!
Tip #3: Let a shipping service do it for you. If you don’t have much wiggle-room with your moving date or destination, using a college shipping service is a great way to save the hassle. College Boxes makes your move to UW easy by picking up your boxes at point A, and delivering them right to your doorstep at your dorm or apartment. You don’t have to take care of scheduling a truck, or navigating around the city during the busy college move in week.
Note: You can only use a tow dolly if you have a front-wheel-drive car. If you don’t know whether your car is front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, refer to your car owner’s manual.
