So you want to rent a trailer but aren’t sure what size hitch ball you need? There are only 3 standard sizes in the United States: 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch hitch balls. You’ll also want to pay attention to what weight capacity your hitch ball is rated for.
Considering how many different trailers a company like U-Haul has to offer, you would think getting the right hitch ball size and weight capacity would be pretty tricky. In actuality, that is far from the case. All U-Haul trailers can be towed using either a 1-7/8″ or 2″ ball. The only thing you need to pay attention to is weight capacity. Smaller options such as the 4×7 Utility Trailer only require a 2,000 pound rated hitchball. Meanwhile the heaviest trailer they offer, the Auto Transport, will require at minimum a 5,000 pound capacity hitch ball and may need a higher weight capacity depending on the total combined weight of the vehicle being towed plus the trailer. So if your hitch ball is 1-7/8″ or 2″ and features a 5,000 pound weight capacity you can haul any cargo trailer U-Haul has to offer. If you are towing a vehicle, the hitch ball capacity will need to equal or exceed the total combined weight being towed. To learn how to check the rating of your hitchball, click here.
