This was one of the most bizarre experiences I have had at a business. The location has no signage from the road and is in a side alley of a series of unmarked warehouses. The trailer was in the back of a small section of grass behind a large trailer. I was at first uncertain if I would be even able to access it. There were no other Uhaul assets on the property. I got there about 10 minutes prior to my scheduled pickup, and as I was looking around, saw small Uhaul sign on a door that was locked. A pair of people drove up in an SUV and asked if I was there for a Uhaul; I said yes. One of them asked, "so were there just no other trailers anywhere else?" No idea why that would matter, I booked a trailer on the website that was closest to my location. The person did help me navigate my truck to the trailer, and assisted in hooking it up, and then also assisted in my navigating around the parked trailer that to get it it out. I was then told to go to an open warehouse bay where I would sign a contract. The warehouse, for lack of a better term, looked like a hoard. I think the business auctions unclaimed mail, and there was a pile of boxes approximately 10 feet x 30 feet x 4 feet high. As they were trying to check me in, a third person was assisting, and someone in the room smelled strongly of stale alcohol. They couldn't figure out how to operate the point of sale system. They did apologize for the delay and said that they have never done it before. They were also on the phone with another person, no idea who the person was or why they were talking to him. I was asked for three forms of ID, and inexplicably proof of my employment. The person on the phone was even saying that my two government IDs weren't enough without explanation. Eventually they got the system to confirm the pick up, and I was asked to sign printouts that did not have signature lines on them. The pickup process took about 30 minutes from the time I arrived on the property, to when I was able to depart. I want to recognized that staff was friendly, willing to find a solution, and apologized for how long it was taking. But the lack of training and general appearance of the facility is not appropriate for a respected national brand that markets easy, straightforward equipment rentals. I honestly think that most people would have just left.
