U-Haul International Team, feedback regarding a recent 6x12 cargo trailer rental experience. During our rental, we needed to detach the trailer from the truck in order to load it properly. However, once the trailer was loaded, we discovered that we were unable to reattach it to the truck hitch because the loaded trailer was too heavy to manually lift and reposition. As a result, we were required to purchase a Hi-Lift jack with sufficient lifting capacity (4,660 lbs. lifting capacity and 7,000 lbs. tested capacity) in order to safely raise and reconnect the trailer. This was an unexpected and inconvenient expense of approximately $100 that we believe could have been avoided. Based on this experience, I strongly recommend that U-Haul consider equipping cargo trailer rentals with an appropriate heavy-duty trailer jack (rated according to the trailer’s maximum load capacity), or at minimum offering one as a standard add-on option at pickup. This would enhance customer convenience, improve safety, and prevent situations like ours.
