Clerk was very friendly

The van was dirty, the manager (John) was not helpful, he told me if I have questions to call U-Haul. He charged me for insurance even though I said I did not want it, It said it was mandatory. I explained to him that it is not mandatory and he insisted he has been doing this for many years and it is mandatory. This made for a difficult return process because I had to go through A LOT to get my refund for the insurance I did not want. Kristi the PCA at the Oklahoma location was a witch to deal with. She was rude to me and to the storage rep that called her to process the refund. If Kristi has a mental limitation you may want to limit her contact with people she has proven to not be capable.

Communication between national/corporate and local locations needs to be GREATLY improved: I reserved and was approved a one-way 4*8 enclosed trailer (FL-TX) online Saturday night -- even took pics of my license in the early check-in section. On Sunday, Uhaul called me to switch locations since my preferred location did NOT actually have the size I wanted - no big deal since new location was just as close. I received a text confirmation in the early morning hours Monday and it still had the old location listed (hmmm). Regardless, I went to the new location on Monday. They did not have record of the reservation. Luckily, they did have the size of trailer I wanted, so she proceeded to try and put me in the system. It kept denying it, so she called U-Haul national so that they could get it transferred from other location. The personnel at this location were friendly, professional and great and finally got me on my way! However, I was delayed over an hour waiting for all of these attempts to get me in the system. Plus I spent time on Saturday night setting up my own reservation and even filled in all the information for pre check-in and then I had to go through it all again on location! On Tuesday, I arrived in Texas, unloaded and then took trailer to previously arranged location for return. Once again, very polite and friendly manager, however, he began asking me if I had been in New York or any northeastern states and when I told him "no, I came directly from Florida." He said that he had been refusing equipment from FL also (due to coronavirus), but that he would accept my trailer. I'm very appreciative and thankful to him for accepting the return, but I feel that conversation never should have had to happen. lf I was going to be refused return, then I should have been told/refused when making the reservation -- or really: 1) opportunity for refusal during online, 2) when Uhaul called me about the change in location, or 3) when making the new reservation on-site in FL. Additionally, I understand the concerns and fears of COVID-19, but it was a 4x8 enclosed trailer that I leased and it could very easily be cleaned and disinfected upon its return. I see no reason there was a chance that its return could have been declined.

I know this virus has many people on edge but the male worker(not manager) there threw my license back and paperwork instead of placing it in front of me

Dropped off trailer at the location , as stated in the contract. When returning the truck the next day, asked the owner why the trailer wasn’t recorded as being dropped off. Guy would not take the truck and refused to check in the trailer. He checked it in late and charged me over $21 for a 24 hour check in fee. I have no idea why. Except that I received an email after dropping the trailer off saying that it had to be returned elsewhere. I called u-haul and was told it was ok to drop both off at that location and was apologized to for the last minute change. Lack of communication ended up causing a lot of stress and costing me more

I have rented many UHall vehicles in my lifetime and have pretty much always been happy with my experience. That is not the case this time. The fact is that I believe I was cheated. When I made the reservation online, I specifically selected No Insurance Coverage. In fact, I never add damage protection to vehicle rentals. When I arrived at the appointed time to pick up the vehicle, I had to wait as there was only one agent and he was helping another individual. After taking care of the other customer, the agent, named Tom, pulled up my reservation and quickly went through some computer steps before saying that something would pop up on my phone. When it did, Tom grabbed my phone and proceeded to make selections as they were presented. Then he handed the phone back to me to “complete “ the process. (I think I just hit an OK button). Tom then printed the contract, marked where the fuel gauge should be and had me sign the document. When I got into the truck, I noticed that the fuel gauge was lower than Tom had indicated so I went back into the office and had him initial my correction. After using the truck for, I refueled it and returned it to the same facility. The man behind the desk told me that I would receive a final invoice via email. The following day, I received the invoice and was quite surprised to see a $14 charge for insurance coverage. The message with the invoice included an email address that I was to follow if I had any questions so I drafted a message stating my dispute with the insurance charge. After a couple of days when I didn’t receive a response I sent another email, and again received no response. Finally I called the rental company and actually spoke with Tom, the person who handled my reservation. Tom’s response to my complaint was that I signed the contract that included this insurance coverage. I agreed with Tom that I signed the document that he printed, but I had no idea that the insurance was included. I pointed out that my reservation clearly indicated that I did not want coverage, and I reminded Tom that it was he who took my phone and made the selections that were presented. Tom did not wish to discuss it further and suggested that I call Corporate if I wanted to dispute the invoice. I did not call Corporate and I do not intend to spend any additional time trying to recoup my $14, but I do want someone in headquarters to be aware that one of your representatives are pulling this scam on customers. In fact, I saw Tom take the phone of the person ahead of me and then go through a number of selections for him as well. I thought that Tom was just helping customers maneuver through the screens, but I now believe that he was adding an option to our contract without our knowledge.

When I was picking up the truck I heard an employee say “Oh yeah, I think I was supposed to do something to that truck” I found the “check tire pressure “alarm in hard and a warning to service the system. When I pointed out the alarms to the employee he said “No worries, tire pressure is good, besides it’s the only truck we have for a one way”. Not exactly comforting information before a 1400 mile road trip. When I got to my final destination I found both the front and back of truck cargo compartment leaked ruining a dozen packing boxes. I’ve used U haul a half dozen times over the year’s with no issue. Add in the sun baked windshield wipers and this was a truly shitty experience. That said the staff at Adventureland Uhaul in Altoona Iowa were great. I’ll probably go with Adventureland again but avoid Big Jim like the Corona virus.
