Safety Tips: At a U-Haul Propane Refill Station
Old tanks must be re-qualified. Propane tanks older than 12 years must be re-qualified before they can be refilled.
An overfill prevention device (OPD valve) is required for refilling. All barbecue grill propane tanks must be equipped with an OPD valve.
Take your propane tank directly to the dispensing station. Never take a propane tank indoors.
All new tanks must be properly purged before the first filling. New propane tanks are water-tested, emptied and filled with a neutral gas by the manufacturer to protect the inside from rust while shipping.
Passengers must exit recreational vehicles or campers during refilling. In addition, any flames or heat sources inside the recreational vehicle or camper must be extinguished or turned off.
We inspect all propane tanks for certification date and condition before refilling. If a propane tank is uncertified, damaged, has a bent or missing collar or foot ring, excessive rust or has been painted violates national propane gas rules and policies and will not be refilled. Safety Tips: At Home or In Transit
Always keep your propane tanks upright and secure. If a propane tank's relief valve opens while the tank is on its side, liquid propane may escape and convert to gas 277 times its original volume. Inspect your propane tank for leaks prior to use. The unintentional discharge of propane gas can cause a flammable, explosive environment. To check for leaks wipe down propane tanks and connections with a solution of soapy water. If a leak is present bubbles will form. If a leak is found, turn the valve off and check the system.
