U-Haul Partners with U.S. Army

On Feb. 20, 2009, U-Haul became an official partner of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. This partnership allows U-Haul to provide priority recruiting status to qualified members of the Army who are participating in the Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) Program.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement between the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) and U-Haul, enlistees interested in obtaining specific job training and qualifications will receive that training while in the U.S. Army. As part of the enlistment process, recruits sign a statement of understanding of their interest to work for U-Haul upon completion of their term of service. As they near the end of their enlistments, these service members will have the opportunity to interview with U-Haul for a specific job at a specific location. 

The official ceremony began with Ed Custodio, Military/U-Haul Field Operations recruiter and 22-year Army veteran, describing the support U-Haul provides to our veterans and detailing our initiatives to hire more veterans. Also speaking at the ceremony was Col. Robert Akam, commander of the 5th Recruiting Brigade, San Antonio, Texas, who applauded the Company’s efforts in supporting veterans through various programs we have in place. 

“U-Haul has supported our military personnel since 1945 and has always given a high priority to veterans in our recruiting process, so this partnership is a natural fit,” stated U-Haul International President John (“J.T.”) Taylor. “U-Haul simply wants to give back to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Veterans have the qualities that we look for in our U-Haul team members: dedication, an excellent work ethic and strong leadership values.” "The Army is excited to add U-Haul to its team of corporate partners," stated LTC Michelle Mitchell. "Signing this agreement enables our recruiters to offer quality employment opportunities to soldiers who will be entering the civilian workforce." 

Many team members who are veterans showed their support by attending the official signing ceremony. The ceremony ended with Taylor and Akam officially signing the agreement.
