U-Haul Reveals Plans for Calgary Herald Building on 16th Street
CALGARY, Alta. (Feb. 8, 2023) — The environmentally friendly U-Haul® Adaptive Reuse program will be implemented to transform the former Calgary Herald® building at 215 16th St. SE into a modernized retail, moving and self-storage facility.
The new U-Haul store will offer truck and trailer sharing, moving supplies, U-Box® portable storage containers and more.
Plans call for the creation of approximately 750 indoor climate-controlled storage lockers with high-tech security features at affordable price points. Renovations are expected to be completed in spring 2024.
“This building is perfect for U-Haul because of its size, location, and the visibility from the highways,” said Razmin Mansoub, U-Haul Company of Southern Alberta president. “We want to continue investing in Calgary. We are honored to bring our services to this side of the city. Preserving the history and integrity in this building is important to U-Haul. We know the community will appreciate the finished product.”
The 13.79-acre property was previously home to the Calgary Herald, a daily newspaper that has been in publication since 1883. The building has been vacant since March 2020 when the newsroom staff transferred to remote work.
In 2020, U-Haul acquired the former Calgary Sun building at 2615 12th St. NE.
Acquisition of the property was driven by U-Haul Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. The adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
By repurposing the 384,647-square-foot building, U-Haul is preventing the use of 4,610 tons of metal manufacturing and transportation (the amount of steel used to make 5,124 passenger cars); avoiding 17,841 tons of new concrete pours (enough to create 639 kilometers of concrete blocks); keeping 22,647 tons of building and demolition debris out of landfills (avoiding 960 dump trucks traveling 32,449 kilometers); and stopping 12,739,240 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere (the carbon emissions of 2,172 large SUVs or pickup trucks for one year).
Once renovations are complete, customers will be able to take advantage of extended-hours access, drive-in load/unload areas; gated and covered boat and RV storage; ADA-accessible units; free use of utility carts; U-Box® portable storage containers; U-Haul Truck Share 24/7®; propane; hitch accessories and professional hitch installation; and more.
“Adaptive reuse is a pillar of the U-Haul business model,” Mansoub added. “Our studies show we can reduce traffic congestion by providing a full-service U-Haul facility in this area. We offer a much-needed product and look forward to serving the community here for years to come.”
U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote job growth within the Calgary community. U-Haul, ranked as a leading veteran-friendly business on the 2022 “Best for Vets: Employers” list by The Military Times, actively recruits veterans and gives them preference in the hiring process.
