U-Haul unveils Nova Scotia Phantom Ship SuperGraphic in Pictou Harbor
Nova Scotia’s Most Famous Apparition Sets Sail Across North America

Stories of a strange and eerie ship that glows on the horizon off Nova Scotia have persisted for more than 250 years, creating ghost-ship lore that “haunts” the area. Sightings have been both numerous and similar, making it the most witnessed unexplained phenomenon in Canada, and possibly the world. On Friday, July 10, 2009, seagoing and land-bound folks alike watched as the famous Phantom Ship sailed ablaze up the Pictou Harbor after the U-Haul unveiling event.
Teaming up with the town of Pictou during the 75th anniversary of the Pictou Lobster Carnival, the U-Haul Company of Atlantic Canada and the U-Haul Media and Public Relations Department officially unveiled the newest SuperGraphic representing the province of Nova Scotia. There is no telling when the famous ghost ship may again be seen ablaze in the Pictou Harbor but, the Phantom Ship can now be seen sailing on the sides of U-Haul moving vans throughout North America.
Marketing Company President (MCP) Bruce Bennett, U-Haul Company of Atlantic Canada, presented plaques to dignitaries representing the province of Nova Scotia. Recipients included the Honourable Peter Mackay, minister of National Defense; the Honourable Charlie Parker, MLA Pictou West; Clarrie Mackinnon, MLA Pictou East; Honourable Ross Landry, MLA Pictou Centre; Mayor Joe Hawes, Pictou; Deputy Mayor, Ken Johnston and Nicole MacDonald-Battist, Pictou director of Recreation.
After the truck was unveiled, everyone had fun trying to find Sammy U, the U-Haul mascot hidden in the SuperGraphic. Then, to make the unveiling official, everyone presented with a plaque was invited to sign the SuperGraphic on the truck and pose for photographs.
On Saturday, July 11, 2009, the recently unveiled Phantom Ship sailed again on the side of a U-Haul van during the Pictou town parade while U-Haul Company of Atlantic Canada employees and the U-Haul Media and Public Relations Department passed out candy to the town spectators.
