Our truck broke down and we had to wait 6 hours for a tow truck. Then we had to wait a day for a new truck and U Haul offered to pay our rooms for the 2 nights that we were put out and did not. The problem was not something that could have been detected but I wish you would have kept your word and paid our rooms instead of sending us to the hotel and then not approving the payment.

I wish it would be made clear on the signage and website that the storage facilities are not open as late as they actually are. I made my plans according to this information and learned on arrival that I only had an hour to unload the truck, and I only had assistance by friends in doing so that day. That said, the employees were really understanding and helpful, especially when I explained other circumstances beyond my control, and helped me figure out a plan to make it work.

One person running this business is rediculous. 4 customers standing around wondering where evrrybody is for almost 10minutes. Because the one hardworking guy was having to deal with something else pulling him away from the front desk. You need at least one more person at this site. And it's the biggest on the northcoast. C'mon U-haul, one guy?? Really??

First, the location. Had to wait forever to have staff show up and provide service. The site also has a storage site and has an alarm system that goes off for 30seconds every time someone comes in and out of storage area. The alarm itself is ear piercing, hurting my ears and making me not want to return. The staff are apathetic to customer service needs and seem to not notice the alarm sound that is 2-3 times louder than a household smoke detector. Second, the equipment. I was provided a 26’ truck which smelled like someone had lived homeless in it for weeks. The gas cap had the cable cut and there was previous damage to front right fender that had just been filed and taped over with white tape. I was told the truck had “1/8 tank” but the fuel light came on immediately upon driving it. While driving it, I also came to realize that the steering column assembling was remarkably broken and unsafe. To drive straight, the wheel was angled 30 degrees to the right. Additionally, there was remarkable play in the steering, making it difficult to make minor corrections while driving at higher speeds. The truck felt genuinely unsafe doing more than 55mph. Easily 10-15 degrees of play in either direction off center, and that center being crooked in the first place. Third, customer service. When I brought these matters to the attention of the individual upon returning the vehicle I was met with apathy and annoyance that I even mentioned anything. When I raise a remarkable mechanical safety concern on a 26’ truck, one which could cause injury or death, I would expect better customer service than telling me “OK” and then wringing me up. It seems like your business generally does not have any concern about the customer and if there were other options in our area, I would never return to U-Haul again after this experience. The store was unpleasant due to noise, the truck was remarkably unsafe, and the staff were annoyed to interface with customers and apathetic toward safety issues. Why are you even in business?

Bizarre... Empty store. Door unlocked, shelves stocked, but nobody working. Nobody. I hung around for ≈15 minutes, in addition to the 10 minutes that other customers had been there, and then I called U-Haul, parked the truck, and dropped the keys in the dropbox.

It is advertised on your website access hours are until 10 pm. However after I paid for the unit I was informed access to units closes a half hour before the office closes. I work 4 ten hour days. Which means I can only access my storage on my days off. Not happy about this at all.

I was charged $70 more when I dropped off because the mileage was set for the shortest route, but not the safest route over the mountain area. Also I rented the truck and came back to pick up the car hauler at the end, which added more mileage to the trip. It’s the hidden cost that always makes the customer feel taken advantage of. The employees were nice, just dislike the extra charge at the end. Plus the drop off was located 10 miles outside my destination, which added more miles.

I wish I didn't have to tow an empty trailer 70 miles over Del Norte and Humboldt County steep and winding roads to return the trailer, but I will take the $160 credit on the rental. What's the point of a U-Haul location in Crescent City that doesn't take drop offs?

Do Not make customers do any app stuff, like face recognition photo and photographing driver’s license… total failure… I’m not an app savvy person…app did my photo okay but repeatedly error message with driver license. … I didn’t have time to deal with that…movers waiting for me and paid by the hour. Totally stressful uhaul process, making customers do the work when we're paying you for the rental. The manager and staff were brilliant, very helpful, and kind, from start to finish.

One downfall: another U-Haul gave me a truck that was atrocious. Someone had likely used it as storage for dead animals. Spent two hours cleaning and airing it out. When I went to this U-Haul in mckinleyville I requested a different box truck in which I was told I could return other box truck to original place and sign an entirely new agreement for another 400$ for new truck after figuring out a 20 mile ride from one U-Haul to the other. You are under the corporation U-Haul yet you do not honor uhauls agreements . I had to unload everything once it was loaded in the truck because the truck is not useable until I can wrap every single item in plastic twice. You could have resolved the issue for me very easily considering you guys had an entire parking lot full of trucks. Apologizing only goes so far and was not helpful for my situation. I was confused as U-Haul mckinleyville seemed to be one of the few competent businesses in Humboldt, but that last experience of zero help really rubbed me the wrong way. It would have been very easy for you guys to alleviate the problems created by another U-Haul and instead you guys did nothing for me. Up to this point everyone was perfect. But of course In the end the incompetence of Humboldt strikes again and the true colors of incompetence rein free. I tried to resolve this but was not helped, please try and do better. In my personal situation I have physical limitations and requiring me to have to unload a loaded truck on my own for a problem another customer created is ridiculous. I can’t use U-Haul ever again, I will not recommend it to anyone, and I will explain to anyone who asks how U-Haul as a corporation works for the customer in a way that once they receive payment, they no longer find themselves required to remediate problems not created by that customer. Granted this entire situation had been created by a different U-Haul, but up til this point it seemed that you guys would have helped. It’s too bad that another U-Haul ruins your name, especially since you had the opportunity to remediate the situation and make things right when it was brought to your employees attention. I am held responsible for the money for the product, but you are not held responsible for the actual product itself. You are a corporation and I am a single person struggling, the least you could have done was make things right and given me a new truck.

We ordered 6 U-boxes. After they were filled and picked up, I needed two more. When I called, I was told that it was not possible except to start a NEW shipment. Full cost for 2 boxes would have been too much and a waste of money.

The storage facility is false advertising online and on signs posted at facility. It is brand new has a huge sign above it that says 24/7 self storage and online it says access storage hours until 10pm to move in. When I got there with all my items to move in, I was informed by the site workers that I had until 630pm daily. (Very pleasant nice workers who were helpful with move in process.) Due to work, this was a major issue with moving in hours and it forced us to rent our uhaul truck for additional days and added costs to move in. This is false advertisement and needs to be changed asap.

First I would like to say all the employees were EXCEPTIONALLY HELPFUL. The whole check-in via app or online process was VERY cumbersome. I SHOULD NOT be forced to use the app or online website. Identify theft and sharing/selling of my data are a huge concern. I DID NOT like I that I HAD to share data and allow access to my phone in order to access the moving truck. I SHOULD NOT have to upload a selfie and photos of my drives license. I SHOULD NOT have to allow the website access to my camera and location data. The overall process to WAY to long as I am not a tech savvy required a lot of assistance. Thankfully the employees were extremely helpful and guided me through the process. I SHOULD NOT have to add another app or upload items (Selfie, location, etc...) just to checkout a rental truck. This felt very impersonal and poor customer relationship. Likely the staff there saved the day for me.

We mentioned to the rental clerk that the key wasn't unlocking the driver side door. His response was something to the effect that you have to kind of giggle or mess with it, but that it works. We had two people try it, and it didn't work. No U-Haul employee came out to show us the magic giggle method, nor do I believe they noted it as something that needed their attention. From my view the employee seemed completely unconcerned. Each time we wanted to unlock the rig someone had to climb through the passenger side to unlock it for the driver. It was inconvenient with two people, but would have been worse had the driver been alone. Also, we didn't have any idea it was a two seater when we rented it. That may have been an oversite on my part, but either way we had 3 people in tow and had to bring an additional personal vehicle to accommodate all of us. It would have been nice to know that only the larger vans seat 3.

U-Haul sent us a Gypsy Moth form indicative what should not be shipped in the box going to California after it was shipped from Iowa. Seems like this form should be provided before the box is shipped from originating location. Seems not useful once the box is on its way to destination. Otherwise the whole process went very smoothly and nothing got damaged on its trip across the country.

The problem began when I was told they could not help me at the counter and said the only way I could check in my new storage unit, was to use the link they sent on my phone. Okied Doki….. until the application doesn't work! The attendant finally decided he COULD help me. What is UHAUL telling its team? and why are they creating such a horrible customer experience by under-staffing and insisting people self-serve their check in with a system that simply would not work. I noticed some missing elements to the application which kept me going in circles. Nothing mentioning the specific info. that was missing which prevented me from advancing like I could see on his desk top. Thank goodness for the level headed customer service person who eventually broke the rules and checked me in on his computer. Otherwise, I would have been driving back another 4 hours with all the stuff still in my car. I would have given a 1-star review but once he stopped following the "rules" he really was nice and helpful.

Uhaul is making money hand over fist. You need to hire more people. It took over a half hour to talk to someone about picking up my reserved truck. It was nearing another half hour of waiting to return it. I got tired of waiting because I had a ride waiting. Other than that, the truck was clean. But the passenger door doesn't seal, the cup holder is broken damn near off and unusable..

Have an employee there when a customer arrives. I waited 12 minutes in the lobby and there was nobody there, just me. Your online booking system sucks. Clunky app to check-in. The customer has to do all the work.

I have used U-Haul for many decades now and typically I find the quality of my experiences with the locations very outstanding. Although the store In Mckinleyville is very impressive in terms of the facility itself, I find the personnel very lacking in terms of their desire to provide ANYTHING that might be loosely be called customer service or any attempt to be friendly. I use U-Haul at least 8 times a year and the Mckinleyville location is very convenient I just wish the personnel were as good as what I have grown used to over the decades.

I was helped by Andrew in renting a 15' truck with an automobile transport trailer. He showed me all the steps, right from hitching the trailer to using the accessories to secure my SUV. The location had a huge lot that made it easy for a first time hauler to test it out before hitting the road. After loading my SUV, another associate came and checked that it was secured correctly. I would highly recommend this location to anybody looking to rent a U-Haul truck.

I was on EAlert for no reason. We almost missed the movers because of it. I had to call the support line and have it taken off. She said that there was no reason for it being on and said there was no outstanding balance. 15 minutes wasted on the phone and waiting in line. With only 1 peraon at the counter with 5+ groups in line it took 20 minutes just to get to the front again.

Low stars were for the driving experience. Not the service location. The front license plate was absent from the vehicle. We were stopped by law enforcement who issued a warning to us about the plate Status. Please update vehicle so this doesn't happen to others. It was horrific.

My guaranteed delivery date was not met and I was not notified of the delay until I called them the day I was flying across the US to get there in time to unload it. I had to take unpaid time off of work to do this. They were a week late on delivery. I missed a week of unpaid time at work and had to purchase a 2nd plane ticket to stay until my belongings arrived. U-Haul gave me a credit of $50 per day it was late. That should definitely be higher to incentivize U-Haul to meet their guaranteed delivery dates. That amount didn’t cover my plane ticket or the cost of loss of work. I lost twice what I paid which was well over priced for the lack of communication and inability to meet the timeline set by the company.

We were in an accident. I called the help Line, was told to Use the web site. Not helpful when stranded on the road side without WiFi. We purchased the full insurance. Now my card was charge as if I never returned the vehicle when it was towed away! Horrible experience

I have visited the Mc Kinleyville site numerous times this week and will continue to do so while we prepare to move. I am a 62 year old female and It would be nice to have some gentle background music in your store. Uhaul should consider pro-rating unit rental. My monthly until rent was paid on Sept 27, 2024. We moved out of the unit and ended our agreement on Oct 1, 2024 but we were told we would not be reimbursed for the unused term between Oct 2 - Oct 27.

Wouldn't recommend this place for storage. It's gigantic building and the inside for the storage units are very weird. Inside every storage unit there are pretty big holes (several inch holes that go all the way from the bottom to the top) that connect your unit to the back person's storage unit and holes on both peoples on both sides of the unit that connect to yours too.. So bugs or rodents will easily get into whoevers unit they want....Theres no full closure in your unit.. Then there's no closure at all on top of the storage unit either. Then inside every unit is rodent bait a big black box which would just attract them. There was spiders crawling in my unit too. I didn't realize all this until I had already rented the unit so cancelled it. They refused to give me a refund said they don't do refunds. Plus they are ridiculously expensive. I got a storage unit somewhere else with at least 4 times the amount of space for a much more reasonable price. Check around there's better options!

Regretfully I don't remember his name, but the closing manager/shift lead Tuesday 8/26 went way above and beyond. Tall with brown hair, glasses, very sweet and pleasant fellow who mentioned he used to work at Ray's in Eureka. He was cogent, clear and communicative, and made a very hefty, strenuous, and stressful moving in process so much easier for having been there with his guidance. Could not have asked for a better experience and he made it all possible. Our team at Redwood Energy deeply appreciates him and all your team.

I thought it might be more work to roll into the "storage castle", as our unit was in the middle of the block. There are plenty of dollies to assist in moving everything. We got our student's stuff in in 2 loads.

The service was good. For the new facility, there is alot of walking. We are seniors with other seniors helping us. That walk from truck access to the actual storage unit will take all of us too long to empty the truck. This changed plans needing more time. And yes I asked about helpers, none. The rate for access, Below average!

The hours of 9-5 make it really hard to move, especially if you are working. The staff was very nice but the overall way this establishment operates is not convenient at all. They also have signs that say they’re 24 hours but they are not. Moving is extremely stressful and this location did not help at all with that. Also, having to tell the front desk that you are there and to unlock your unit is very inconvenient especially if you’re in a time crunch.

False advertising of 24/7 access to storage! Access is limited to daytime hours only and is not convenient for working stiffs! On top of that, a employee has to be notified when accessing your unit during a very limited time. Period and it often takes 30 minutes to have someone unlock your unit. This is ridiculous!

Approximating the gas used cost me at least an extra gallon. I think the gas tanks should be full before and after, as the gauge does not move accurately while filling, the truck needs to be running while filling to see the gauge, which is dangerous and possibly illegal. I only went 14 miles and put 4 gallons of gas in at over 6$ gal. There was no sympathy from personnel or acknowledgement the policy of estimating gas used is unfair.

The process went extremly smooth. Our plan was to move out of kitchen and living room during kitchen remodel. I was worried about the distance to unit. But available carts made it easy. Security was good also.

Because we rented a trailer we were able to get a storage locker for free the first month. Monthly rates are good considering the gouge that everyone seems to be taking with out looking back and caring. Thanks uhaul you have been good to us and we appreciate you.

Jethro and staff are great, very helpful,, tops in customer service. Access hours are too limited, that's my biggest complaint. I did get a free month since I rented a U haul trailer.It seems I lost a day, when I transferred to a new unit. There aren't enough entrances. One has to go all the way to the side to get in. The other entrance is closed.

First my moving crew through Moving Help, no showed and I had to find another crew (causing a day delay.) Monday morning while enroute to McKinleyville, I had to re-route due to the closure of CA Highway 3, which added mileage and hours (6.5 hours total) to my transportation time. I got to my rental in McKinleyville, unloaded what was staying, then reloaded everything going to storage, I fueled up the truck and headed to Uhaul arriving at 6pm. The app, website and the door stated open until 7pm... the storage stated open until 10pm. The one employee that was there argued with me and told me that all those times were all "misinformation" and that I would have to pay to have the truck another day and I couldn't check in to the storage unit. I ended up having to pay an additional $116 and pay $200 for people to help the following day. While the road closure was beyond control, I was within the hours stated on the website and app... to be rudely told that I couldn't check in and return the truck was just plain wrong and added to my cost. I have used Uhaul many times, this was absolutely the worst move I have experienced. The employees that assisted me on Tuesday were considerate, the employee on Monday was NOT!!

I am so impressed by the staff at this U-Haul location. I got there late due to packing up and traveling from far off location. The guy manning the storage unit that day 2/10/23 stayed until we were able to pack it all in. I wish I could remember his name. He really went over and beyond to help us out. I truly appreciated that. We were working as fast as we could to unload stuff from the truck and we got it all in. Thanks to the staff at this U-Haul storage place I was able to get all moved in. The place was clean and well lighted. I just wish that the hours were more convenient for accessing the unit, i.e. later hours as I work late till about 6 PM and would like to be able to get stuff from the unit after I get off work. I am soooooo grateful that we now have climate controlled storage units here where I live. It is truly a necessity due to the cold, damp weather here.

Having to deal with someone to unlock a storage door because there is no alarm system is crazy! I won’t be in this storage unit very long. The unit is a very far walk from the entrance door. It will literally take 10 minutes round trip to get to the unit from the entrance door.

I reserved a storage unit in person the end of July. When I arrived on August 15th to move in, they couldn't find my reservation. I was told to return when the manager got in around 11am to resolve the issue (I was frustrated, but patient). When I came back at 11am I was told the manager was out of town until Friday. Long story short, they finally got me a unit. I paid a months storage and moved in a few things. I noticed a rat bait trap inside my unit. Surest way to chum in vermin is to place bait inside individual units rather than the exterior hallways. I changed my mind, moved my few belongings out. I attempted to get a refund, but the manager never called me back. The staff is not well supported by management. I do not recommend this storage facility.
