Building History

Samuel Friedland founded the first Reading Giant Quality Price Cutter market in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in the 1920’s. Friedland's modest success with his original grocery market chain ultimately led to the creation of the first Food Fair market in the late 1940’s. Later, in the late 1950’s, Food Fair acquired the Setzer’s Supermarket chain of approximately 40 stores and also the J.M. Fields Department stores in the 1960’s. These acquisitions led to significant market share in the state of Florida and bolstered the purchase of a Philadelphia based chain called Best Markets. Best Markets carried a company owned private label brand called Pantry Pride which was widely recognizeable and led to a rebranding of most of the stores to Pantry Pride markets. Friedland's chain then experienced nationwide success after converting the Food Fair brand over to the discount chain Pantry Pride.

Food Fair and the Pantry Pride brands grew into a 2.7-billion-dollar company with close to 500 stores around the nation by 1978. Unfortunately, the company eventually claimed bankruptcy and ended up closing nearly 200 stores over a three-year period. Food Fair rapiidly liquidated a large amounts of assets and nearly two thirds of their stores by 1986. A complex acquisition, liquidation and merging period eventually moved shares and renamed Pantry Pride to the Revlon Group, also becoming a seminal supreme court case known as Revlon, Inc. V. MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings, Inc. The small number of remaining stores were eventually closed by the year 2000. The former Food Fair building at 75 Division St. was built in 1958 and U-Haul acquired the property in 1989.
