Adaptive Reuse in METHUEN, MA at U-HAUL MOVING & STORAGE OF METHUEN

Building History
The building on 99 Pleasant Valley Street was built in 1966 and was last used as a Verizon fleet maintenance garage. Verizon is an American wireless network operator that provides mobile phone services across the United States. Verizon was founded in 1998 when an American and British telecommunication firms, Bell Atlantic and Vodafone, created a joint wireless phone venture that would become known as Verizon Wireless. U-Haul acquired the former Verizon property in 2019 for adaptive reuse.
Located directly behind the Verizon building is a structure along 145 Milk St. that was built in 1970. The property was formerly occupied by the Parlex Corporation. The Parlex Corporation was known for designing and manufacturing flexible and interconnectable circuits and cables for their customers. Parlex has engineered products for use in automotive, computer, telecommunications, medical, and military markets. Parlex Corp. moved out of the building in 2017 and the property was acquired by U-Haul two years later for adaptive reuse.
Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
