Adaptive Reuse in SAUKVILLE, WI at U-HAUL MOVING & STORAGE OF PORT WASHINGTON

Building History
Built in 1992, this building served as a local Piggly Wiggly store for more than two decades. Piggly Wiggly, America's first true self-service grocery store, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916 by Clarence Saunders. At the time, a customer would present their grocery list to a clerk, who would then gather the goods from the store shelves. Saunders realized this was a waste of time and money, so he came up with an innovative solution that soon revolutionized the entire grocery industry: Saunders developed the way we all know as routine, the chance for shoppers to serve themselves. When Piggly Wiggly relocated, U-Haul purchased this site in 2016, incorporating its adaptive reuse practices to convert this abandoned grocery store into a full-service moving and self-storage facility. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Renovations have provided U-Haul customers access to 611 indoor self-storage units with climate-control availability, state-of-the-art security, and 24-hour access.
