Lot is muddy and full of holes. Staff is more focused on straw than trailers. Had to do all my own hook up and test because the guy was too busy on his phone. Trailer was in poor condition and electrical was faulty.

This review is mainly for first time renters who do not have experience renting U-Hauls. The lesson learned and the advice I have for you is to make sure you read all the fine print and do not go by what you are verbally told. Being a first time user of U-Haul, my wife and I stopped in at this location Friday morning to see about availability for renting a covered 6x12 trailer for Saturday usage. I asked if I can pick up the trailer early, like Friday evening, and if there was an extra charge? The person at the office informed me that I can take the trailer that Friday if I wanted and they do not charge an extra fee. He punched in my information to rent the trailer and I paid the $39.00 rental fee. Then I asked when do I need to return the trailer and was told they are closed Sunday so I can drop it off Monday morning if I wanted to or even on Sunday while they are closed. The way this was all explained to me and my wife by the office person made us think that we did not have to rush to return the trailer and there would be no extra charges besides the initial $39.00 fee for Saturday usage. I dropped off the trailer Sunday and texted the person that signed us up of the return of the trailer. The next day my credit card was charged $117.00 by U-Haul for an extra 3 days. So, a one day $39.00 trailer rental ended up costing me over $156.00. I called the Smith Straw office to inquire about these charges and was told they will contact me back. I never got a response back. I’m sure there are probably plenty of reputable/ helpful U-Haul dealers in the Fairhope/Daphne area. I would recommend to you that you look into those places first before you consider this place. The other reviews that I read of this location were also accurate in their descriptions of the lack of help in hitching up the trailer. Good thing my wife was there to help me hitch up the trailer or I would have had a hard time by myself trying to hitch up the trailer in the grass where it was sitting.

Dean JThe only hiccup was communication. Twice, I made two calls to the number provided to get confirmation that the item was in fact there. The individual (Kevin..?) answered both times, but indicated that he was not at the place of business. He stated that he would contact someone to call me back. Both times, there was a return call, but the connection was bad and the call was terminated on the other end. When we arrived at the site to pick up the trailer, the attendant was very helpful and assisted with issues connecting the trailer lights.
