Although I found the rental agent, kind patient and considerate, in my opinion U-Haul’s check in/out process was unsatisfactory and borderline consumer redlining! This was not the type of service I experienced 30 miles south of location, several months ago! I also found this process to be time consuming, intrusive and unnecessary! The thought me standing in a dark vacant lot (alone) taking picture of your vehicle as proof of no damage, was also degrading! If this is your new process, I will NO LONGER rent from U-Haul. Moreover, I’ll advise others to spend their important consumer dollars elsewhere!

Sean was very helpful in setting up my account so i could get the truck off hours. When I got there It took almost an hour to get the truck. I had to start the phone process over because U Haul said my pickup time was at 7am when I booked it for 7:30 am. I got to the part where you go out and inspect the truck hit the yes button and the system logged me out because i took to long. Had to start over again. That was so f'd up and frustrating.

I have rented several trucks over the years but this experience was, by far the worst. At around 12:30PM, I walked into the U-Haul on Scotland Road in Orange, NJ to rent a one-way truck. Because they didn’t have any one-way trucks available, I was directed to call customer service. After speaking to the first rep and comparing prices, I was told a one-way truck from NJ to Brooklyn would be $98 plus a $5 environmental fee and unlimited miles, while renting it roundtrip would be $19.95 but I would have to pay $1.99 a mile. At 40 miles each way (or $80 miles roundtrip) it would cost over $180, so I went with the one-way truck. I was advised to check-in online to expedite the process. Little did I know it would be anything but expeditious. After checking in, the website indicated that my rental was ready for pick-up 28 minutes away in Elmwood Park, NJ. While en route to that location, I get a call from Sabria advising me that my rental was ready for pick-up in Newark. Though confused, I switched gears and headed to the Clinton Place location in Newark. Upon arriving, I could see that both entrances were gated and locked. I called Sabria and let her knie the place was closed. After a brief hold, she indicated she would process my rental contract over the phone and give me the code to the lockbox. However, when it came time to open the lockbox, it was already unlocked with no keys inside. I tried the same code on the second lockbox to no avail. I was then directed to find the truck and search within and in the back for the keys. No luck. I’m placed on hold again. This time much longer. Mind you, this whole time I’m outside in 30 degree weather. Finally, Sabria comes back on the phone and says she’ll have to send me to another location, assuring me that this one would have someone onsite who would assist me. So I head 20 minutes away to Bloomfield, NJ. It’s now 3PM. So, despite the obvious frustration at the situation, admittedly, the customer service up to this point was fine—that is until I arrived at the ultimate pick-up location at SNJ Electronics. The agent there, Shawn (sp?), was totally unprofessional, self-serving and rude. I arrive at this location only to find it also locked and unoccupied. Needless to say, I’m vexed. I call Sabria again and she informs me that Shawn is probably “in the garage” but would be right out. Five minutes later, still no Shawn. I get out of my car to wait inside the vestibule. After another minute or two I call the number in the confirmation text to see what’s going on. Shawn answers and says I don’t see him because I went to the store and not the parking lot (where the rentals are and where he is). I walk over and he’s seated in the driver’s seat of the truck I’m to rent. I ask how I was supposed to know he was out there and he says “by calling” just like I had. Rrrriiiiight. After taking my license and credit card information, (mind you, this while time I’m outside in 30 degree weather) he tells me it

For older people and those who are not tech savvy, there should be an alternative to the online check-in/check-out process. It was not as easy as you make it seem. Also having to take so many pictures of the vehicle is a waste of time especially if it is being returned in the evening and being parked where there is no light source.

The location certainly wasn’t what I expected I didn’t feel safe parking my car in the deserted dirt muddy lot where there was no lights AT ALL! Pitch black at night during at my return All though It was suggested to me I can park on the street I gave it a pass because Bloomfield isn’t a bad town but any other surrounding Newark, Orange, Irvington towns definitely not!! I wasn’t feeling I had to take time in this dark lot to walk around the vehicle & take verification photos while looking over my shoulder checking my surroundings I got charged an environmental fee And two taxes witch felt was inappropriate The attendant was kool & assisted me with my rental & any questions no complaints about him

After a reservation made 10 days earlier in Parsippany, I was told I needed to go and pickup the truck myself at a different location over 30 miles away! I called this new location all day to confirm. Never a pick up. I tried to leave a message for a call back …. the mail box was full I called your 800 number (35 minutes on the on hold music) which confirmed the new location. Anyway, when I went to the new location I found a "store" closed and with a message by "Shawn" referring to a neighbor Barber Shop … who knew nothing about nothing. I called again your 800 numbers and after close to one hour of being bounced from one operator to the next and the irritating on hold music and endless irritating announcements about "reporting my experience with Uhaul" somebody was able to remotely give me access to a lock box with a key... What should have been a 15 minutes transaction at a counter close to my home, became an all day nightmare more than 30 miles from it. The worst... And where is "Shawn" anyway???
