I arranged a short local rental of a 15' U-Haul truck via the app for my children to move a washer and dryer from a storage shed to a home—all within Layton, UT. I set it up from Nevada with my card on file, quoted at $29.95 for the in-town day rate (<24 hours), plus dolly and insurance, with a 24-hour buffer since they only needed it briefly. At pickup from Layton Crossing Storage LLC (2176 W Layton Crossing Pkwy, Layton, UT 84041), the counter employee was extremely rude, condescending, and argumentative. My children clearly stated it would be far less than 24 hours, yet he insisted on charging double rates ($59.95/day for the truck, plus doubled add-ons), raised his voice, dismissed the online/invoice pricing of $29.95, and argued aggressively—even when I explained directly on the phone. The truck itself was disgusting: gooey, sticky residue all over the cup holders, crayon marks smeared throughout the vehicle, and overall poor cleanliness. When my kids noticed existing damage and requested a damage annotation sheet to document it, he claimed he didn't have one and said he'd just use a sticky note—unprofessional and inadequate for proper inspection. He also bypassed my card on file and used my sons instead. This created major unnecessary stress for a simple local rental. Fortunately, U-Haul customer service (Justin) listened attentively and escalated promptly. Dustin Knell followed up professionally and kindly, advised returning via the app, and ensured the correct lower rate was charged with no overcharges. The billing was resolved thanks to excellent corporate support, but the in-person experience—rude staff, filthy truck, and substandard damage handling—at this location was disappointing and reflects poorly on U-Haul standards. I recommend avoiding this dealer and managing rentals fully online or through central support whenever possible.
