I had an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience with U Haul that caused significant delays and unnecessary stress during what should have been a straightforward rental. I made my reservation in advance, expecting a smooth pickup process. However, when I arrived, the first truck I was given had a burned out tail light and was clearly not ready for use. They attempted to assign me another truck, but the mobile app required to document the vehicle would not allow me to proceed because the license plate listed in the app did not match the actual truck. This happened with multiple trucks. The employee working at the counter was clearly overwhelmed and alone, and while she tried to help, she did not know how to resolve the issue. She had to call dispatch, which did not solve the problem. Eventually, the store owner arrived, but he also did not know what to do. By this point, I had been waiting for an hour and a half. Instead of properly fixing the issue, the owner canceled my original contract and created a new one just to get me out the door. He could not even locate my original drop off location in the system, despite me showing him the exact location on my phone. He assigned me to a completely different and inconvenient drop off point. On top of that, there was no proper walk around inspection, no documentation, and I was not asked to sign anything. I was simply told I could take pictures if I wanted, but it was not necessary. After leaving, I discovered the fuel level was misrepresented. I was told the truck had five eighths of a tank, but it actually had only one half tank. Given how much time I had already lost, I chose not to go back and argue and instead paid out of pocket to add gas. When I reached my destination, the drop off location I had been assigned was completely impractical, with no clear place to park the truck or return the key. I had to call customer service again and was told to ignore the contract and return the truck to my original location instead. To make matters worse, I was later charged an additional seven dollars for fuel even though I returned the truck with more gas than it had when I picked it up. When I called customer service again, I was asked to provide proof of the fuel level at drop off, which I had, but of course I had no proof from pickup because the staff never followed proper procedures or documented anything. This entire experience was disorganized, unprofessional, and incredibly time consuming. I lost over an hour and a half dealing with issues that should never have happened, was given incorrect information multiple times, and was ultimately charged unfairly. I will not be using U Haul again if I can avoid it, and I would strongly caution others to double check everything and document absolutely everything themselves because clearly the company does not.
