Area 51
Area 51

Is there a new Area 51?

Current Map of Area 51

In June 1997, Jim Wilson of Popular Mechanics claimed in an article that the top-secret activities at Area 51 had been relocated to the Area 6413 in the Utah Launch Complex. According to his article, Wilson claims to have visited the entrance to Area 51 and found only a "simple cattle gate, two tarnished brass locks and rusty barbed wire" guarding the area. He then attempted to attract the attention of Area 51 security by flashing his headlights and honking his horn for 15 minutes. When nobody responded to this attention-getter, Wilson concluded that Area 51 had shut down. Most others, however, disagree with Wilson's conclusion and state that the base continues to conduct its top-secret business as usual. Residents near McCarran Airport state that the JANET aircraft are still being used for their daily shuttle service and there has been no decrease in the number of cars seen in the worker's parking lot. Wilson's findings could easily be explained as he may have made a wrong turn on his way to Area 51, ending up at the northeastern boundary of Range 61. On May 22, 1977, Associated Press writer Robert Macy wrote that "Reports of the demise of the top-secret base in Nevada may be premature." According to an anonymous source in Washington D.C., it would cost $5 billion dollars to move the facility and such an operation would be unthinkable. We may never know exactly what goes on inside Area 51, or even if it has moved to Area 6413. But whether or not you believe Area 51 was transferred to Area 6413, here's something to ponder: 64 minus 13 equals 51.
