Science Behind the Singing

Singing and booming sands have been referred to as one of the most puzzling yet impressive natural phenomenon ever encountered. It is known that singing, booming, whistling, roaring, squeaking or barking sand is producing sounds of either high or low frequency under pressure. Scientists usually agree that sounds are caused by the rubbing of grains against each other however there are very strong sets of feelings behind research and theories in this particular field. With several scientists researching the phenomenon, scientific study over the last few decades has evolved into a better understanding of acoustic emissions from sands. While creating the Singing Sands SuperGraphic, U-Haul had the opportunity to speak with physical chemist Professor Emeritus Dr. Douglas Goldsack of Laurentian University in Ontario, who provided insight into his published research and years of field study, as well as with Nathalie Maria Vriend from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), who provided insight into her research.
