U-Haul Reuse of Former Kmart Brings Benefits to Roswell
ROSWELL, N.M. (Feb. 19, 2021) — U-Haul® is now operating out of the former Kmart® at 1705 S. Main St.
The building, erected in 1975, was vacated in 2018. U-Haul acquired the 92,103-square-foot building in 2019.
Adaptive reuse created 610 indoor self-storage units, giving customers access to a variety of climate-controlled rooms with high-tech security features at affordable price points. Self-storage customers will have extended hours access. This summer, customers will also have access to 50 drive-up self-storage units.
“U-Haul has been repurposing vacated buildings for decades, and we are excited to show off our sustainability model in Roswell,” said Bianca Sotelo-Herrera, U-Haul Company of Southern New Mexico. “We want to provide the highest quality facility for our customers and expand the products and services our customers have been demanding.”
U-Haul Moving & Storage at South Main St. Roswell also offers essential moving services like truck and trailer sharing, moving supplies, towing equipment, U-Box® portable storage containers, professional hitch installation and more.

“There is a huge demand for self-storage in Roswell, so U-Haul needs to expand to meet that demand,” Sotelo-Herrera added. “Breathing life back into this building was important and we’re excited to serve this community for years to come.”
Acquisition of the property was driven by U-Haul Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. The adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
As an essential service provider, U-Haul remains open during the COVID-19 pandemic while offering contactless business programs and enhanced cleaning protocols, including added steps for sanitizing equipment between customer transactions. U-Haul products are used daily by First Responders; delivery companies bringing needed supplies to people’s homes; small businesses trying to remain afloat; college students; and countless other dependent groups, in addition to the household mover.
