U-Haul Shares Plans for Former Calgary Sun Building

CALGARY, Alta. (Oct. 15, 2020) — U-Haul® will use its ecofriendly adaptive reuse program to transform the old Calgary Sun building at 2615 12th St. NE into a modern retail and self-storage facility.

U-Haul Moving & Storage at Deerfoot will offer truck and trailer sharing, towing equipment, moving supplies, U-Box® portable storage containers and more. Plans call for the creation of approximately 700 indoor climate-controlled storage lockers with high-tech security features at affordable price points.

“This building was very attractive to U-Haul because of its proximity to downtown Calgary and the visibility from Deerfoot Trail,” stated Naga Chennamsetty, U-Haul Company of Southern Alberta president. “We want to invest in this city. Our goal is to bring a full-service moving and storage facility to our customers in order to meet the demand here. We know the community will love and appreciate the finished product.”

The 2.66-acre property was previously home to the Calgary Sun, a daily newspaper that has been in publication since 1980. The building has been vacant since 2018. U-Haul acquired the 89,327-square-foot building on Oct. 5.

Acquisition of the property was driven by U-Haul Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. The adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

“We’re working closely with the city because Calgary’s development is important to us,” added Chennamsetty. “Our studies show we can reduce traffic congestion by providing a full-service U-Haul facility in this area. We offer a useful product that people need, and we look forward to serving the community in this location for many years to come.”

Chennamsetty expects to hire a staff of 20 or more Team Members when the store is fully operational. U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote job growth in Calgary. Veterans receive preference in the hiring process. Find U-Haul career opportunities at uhauljobs.com.
