U-Haul to Close Portland Repair Shop after 43 Years

PORTLAND, Maine (Nov. 17, 2023) — The U-Haul-owned Portland Repair Shop at 411 Marginal Way plans to cease operations on Dec. 3.

U-Haul will maintain ownership of the building and repurpose it for the self-storage expansion of U-Haul Moving & Storage at Route 295.

“U-Haul is in growth mode, and we simply ran out of space at our Route 295 location,” said Shawn Goldrup, U-Haul Company of Maine president. “We’ve decided to use our U-Haul Adaptive Reuse sustainability model to convert the existing repair shop into more self-storage.”

Portland Repair has serviced U-Haul rental equipment since 1980. Moving trucks and trailers in the region will soon be serviced at Brunswick Repair at 1 Cressey Road in Brunswick.

“Expanding and relocating our maintenance branch will translate to greater efficiency and convenience for our team, which in turn will help us better serve our customers throughout Maine,” Goldrup added. “Plus, we’ll be able to offer more self-storage options for the residents of Portland and neighboring communities.”

As a result of the Portland Repair Shop closing, eight U-Haul Team Members will be let go.

Local U-Haul Companies are always exploring opportunities for growth as they pursue means to better serve the needs of customers, but sometimes find it necessary to close or relocate stores, shops and offices. Reasons for closures can include: long-term strategic plans; safety and security concerns; physical site conditions and limitations; shifts in demographics; availability of local Team Members; trends in migration; expansion of the U-Haul neighborhood dealer network; proximity to other new or existing Company locations; and external factors.
