The business failed to open during their advertised hours, leaving me waiting in the cold rain as they arrived late due to conflicts at home with their children. They rushed down the pothole-ridden road with kids in tow and seemed baffled as to why I hadn’t entered; the door was locked, and no lights illuminated the interior. Our conversation about the truck rental took place amidst the chaos of their child screaming at the top of their lungs, a level of noise so intense that I had to cover my ears. To complicate matters further, the area is a dead zone for cell reception. There was no posted phone number for inquiries, and I couldn’t log into the truck rental app. This entire experience was not only frustrating but also a significant inconvenience. The U-Haul company has a major issue with its policies that discriminate against people who cannot drive due to vision loss. I am moving and had a registered driver with me, yet they refused to allow me to pay for the equipment I needed to move my things and accept my driver’s ID. They claimed they were doing me a favor by overlooking my inability to drive due to blindness and accepting my driver's ID. While my ears were still ringing from the screaming children, I was met with ableism masquerading as kindness.
