I have always trusted U-Haul, but this rental experience was extremely disappointing. I reserved my truck for 9:00 AM because I was on a very tight schedule for my family’s moving day. Instead of a quick pickup, I didn’t leave with the truck until after 11:00 AM, putting me more than two hours behind and disrupting the entire day. The employee at the pickup location clearly wasn’t trained to process U-Haul rentals. I first had to wait about 20 minutes because the U-Haul work phone had been left on top of a rented trailer, and he had to leave to retrieve it. After that, he struggled to complete my reservation, explained that the person who normally handles U-Haul rentals wasn’t there, and eventually told me the system had gone down. After waiting for more than two hours, I ended up calling U-Haul Customer Service myself to complete the rental because the pickup location couldn’t. The representative on the phone was able to help me get everything processed so I could finally receive the keys and start my move. My biggest disappointment is that U-Haul allows locations to operate without properly trained staff or a backup plan when the regular employee is unavailable. Customers reserve trucks for specific times because they have moving crews, family members, and other appointments depending on that schedule. Losing more than two hours on moving day is unacceptable. The truck itself worked perfectly, and the U-Haul Customer Service representative was helpful. Unfortunately, the experience at the pickup location overshadowed everything else. U-Haul needs to do a better job ensuring its neighborhood dealers are properly trained and prepared to serve customers.
