Alexander RI guess I’m old, but I’m not into the whole self service thing. Although the people at Sterling were helpful, they’re limited to what they can do because it all had to be done on a cell phone.
Stephen SI didn’t answer the cleanliness ONE because when I first took my unit there seven years ago, there was a woman there that walked around kept the place immaculate. The bathrooms were clean, a lot was free of litter and debris. Once she left about a year ago, maybe not even that long you could see a definite lacks in the cleanliness of the place. Other than that, it was a great experience.

Lorraine GThe Auto Transfer was defective. The left front belt didn't hold the wheel and it created potential accident and damage to the car. During the ride to Florida I had to put it on 7 times. When I called to U-Haul Road assistance they declined to resolve this issue and also were not able to explain me how to release the belt. Thanks to the employee of Sterling, VA location who helped me to resolve the issue over the phone. This Auto transport needs to be fixed otherwise never to be given to the customers.

ALAN JEverything went well at the drop-off location. They checked for damages and the Odometer reading. No extra surcharges...Yay! Was treated like family. I used a Round Space Lock (that they sell in the store) on the cargo gate latch. That is something all customers should have to keep their cargo safe.
MARK GI suggest that when a unit is closed out, lock removed, and the unit is empty and clean, that the front office print out a sheet that officially closes out the account and given to the customer, thank you Scott Shelton

Bruce BThis is not as much about the location but more so the general process and how limited the workers were at the location to provide proper customer service because of overall U-Haul processes that do not help the customer. I made the reservation online to speed up the process. When I arrived, there was a line of people and the process was for everyone to scan a QR code at the desk and then work through everything on a personal phone…all of the same steps I did online, I had to do them again, while online. This added a lot of extra time and frustration to the visit…and it only got worse. I had to re-enter the emergency contact info while in line and would not let me rent tot truck until someone answered a phone. This is a TERRIBLE process. It also asked for employer info, which U-Haul has no reason to have that info but would not let me move forward with the rental. I’ve rented U-Haul for decades, but based on this experience I will look at Penske, budget, or some other provider next time. This process was insulting and infuriating. Never again.

STEVEN PI made my reservation a week in advance. I told the man on the phone I would pick it up Saturday morning. However, when I got there the size truck I requested was not available. The clerk told me I had to be there at 8:00 am. I WISH I would have been told that when I made the reservation.

dinesh sThere were issues with our reservation. My husband called on Tuesday to reserve a truck from the Spring Street Herndon VA location, they said they could not rent a one-way truck but that they could put in a reservation for the Old Ox Road Herndon VA location. He never received a confirmation text, so he called the Old Ox Herndon location, they said that the Spring Street representative actually reserved a truck for us in Manassas VA. So the Old Ox representative made a reservation for him. When we went to the Old Ox location to pick up the truck, they had no record of a reservation, and that the size of truck the Old Ox rep described was not available for one-way rental. So, we ended up with a larger more expensive truck. Then the drop off location was not specified on our contract so I spent an hour on the phone talking to two different uhaul customer service finding a location near my home. The reservation process was a mess.

JAIME AChecking in was awful, the web check in form doesn’t work, reset three times and wouldn’t capture pictures. Took 30 minute and had to consistently go and get assistance because the web viewer was so bad. The staff was super helpful and very good but they were trying to to make up for broken technology.
Ethan YCustomer service was horrible. The server ws not focusing on clearing with one customer at a time. He could improve by doing better on this. Equipment was dirty, but because of time wasted, we had no choice but to get the rental and get going .

MAURICE SRequest wording in app to be fixed "scan barcode to confirm drop off location" apparently requires the customer to scan a QR code on the door of the location. This was confusing since a QR code is not a bar code. Also, the app fails to scan the QR code. Maybe include a clear sign on the wall directing customers to the barcode/QR code to be scanned during equipment drop off.

Joseph MThis is the second location. The first was terrible. They were having internet issues and couldn’t verify my reservation didn’t ask for any information. I got the keys from an older gentleman. The van was on and when I opened the door it smelled like someone had smoked 3 cartons of cigarettes. The windshield was cracked on the right hand side. The van was dirty, there was trash and French fries between the seats. I didn’t receive the utility nor furniture dolly that I requested. I called support and they were able to move my location to old ox road, thank you Brian! The place was clean, got the agreement by text and email, the van was clean, and got the both dollies requested! A gentleman even walked me through how to return the van after hours. Very good experience!

Anthony ZThe truck I reserved was given to another person so I was assigned a different truck with gas almost on “E”. Upon returning the truck, I place the same amount of gas in the truck as received and was charged a $55 fuel fee. When I provided verification of where the gas hand was upon receiving the truck to the manager, I was told I needed to come back to the store and place another gallon in the truck in order to not be charged the fuel fee. This was a poor response from management and a horrible resolution to the problem. I suggest better management.

ALPHAEUS MI have been renting trucks for over 20 years from U Haul. The management and workers at this location are fantastic. However, U Haul, as a company, has made it very difficult to do business. It took me 45 minutes to "check-in" and get my truck on Tuesday morning. Total waste of time! GET RID OF THE REMOTE SYSTEM!! I used to be able to walk in with my reservation and be out in 6 minutes. You need people to do this transaction, not cell phones.
MARK MUsing the phone app to pick up proved to be very difficult, it worked, then it didn't work for both picking up and returning, it was more like a nightmare and should be reviewed... If I ever rent again from Uhaul, it won't be done from that crappy app. Good thing the siteeis manned by real people, who was somewhat helpful, but not very helpful as they watched me struggle with picking up and returning my rental, like it was a funny joke or something... Really disappointing, they should have come forward to help, instead of watching me struggle with the app...
Carl CThe trailer I rented had damage to both bumpers including having the raceway for the marking lights ripped off on the passenger side. The cable was exposed and touching the tire and the light was just hanging down the side of the pumper. There were no other trailers to be rented that were 6'x12'. I told the employee that I could not drive a trailer that would obviously not make it to my destination. He was a good kid and really did want to help. He cobbled the wire in place with zip ties. I don't rent from u-haul so I can drag busted up cobbled equipment. Driving +1000 miles worrying the entire time the lights are going to stop working was no fun at all.

MONICA MStaff is fine, equipment clean/functional. Only issue was the appliance dolly I requested and paid for was not loaded in vehicle upon arrival. As it was a phone pickup outside normal hours, no-one there to assist. 1-800 U Haul or whatever, was helpful, but only local place that could provide wouldn't open for another hour and that threw off my entire schedule. I went without dolly and was later apparently credited for the charge.

App took a long time to approve me. App said dolly and pads were in the truck. They weren't. Had to find an employee to get them for me. Truck parked so I couldn't take pictures of it that the app needed, so waited around until clear. Total time at U-Haul: about an hour.
Rich AIf you're going to charge customers for gas if the tank isn’t returned completely full then you shouldn’t be giving the truck with only half the gas tank full and then charging when they don’t return it completely full. I filled it to 3/4 after receiving it with only slightly over 1/2 full at pick up and was charged for returning it partially empty, why am I paying for someone else’s gas?

Area seemed clean and no pests were found . Hours to access the unit and space to maneuver were adequate. On the negative site. Security, got concerned once when I went to access my storage and found another storage unit with lock forced open and cut. I immediate informed the staff. The following day I checked my storage unit and still found the other unit lock cut on the floor (don’t know the outcome after that). The access door to multiple storage units seemed stubborn and it took long time to get addressed (Maintain) Contacted store manager thru phone call then text he never got back to me. To fix and issue about actual unit date of acquirement. Other employees were nevertheless helpful to there extent. Lighting of area can be improved. Units are not lit so users need external light at night.

Definitely a nice problem going on there as I noticed bait stations around the building. We used this location as we got a free month of storage, but wish I went somewhere else. That was an inconvenience for me and I definitely did not appreciate it! I’ve never issues with that particular U-haul over the years, that’s why I’ve continued to use that one. Now, I don’t think I’ll ever use that u-haul place again.

I tried to follow up with the local location, and they said on their end, no amount appeared.

He then proceeded to take his sweet time trying to figure out what to do, called another location, etc. After a few minutes the other woman working advised him of an open unit. He did something on the computer and said “you can check in online now”. Once I confirmed I was able to he didn’t advise where the unit was, provide a map of the property, or offer any other assistance. I have rented storage units from U-Haul in the past but this one thus far has been the least helpful.

yimi C | First ImpressionsI've been using U-HAUL storage for over 15 years. Just like last week, the u-haul staff use unprofessional language and treat their customers very disrespectfully. Yes, our company has never missed a usage fee. Of course, it pays automatically until last April 09. The staff said they would prosecute me. Several times while I was at work, a woman and a man were very annoying on the phone/703-437-3404 and asked me to give out my credit card number right away. I couldn't trust them and call the company card number over the phone. Naturally, I immediately entered my autopay credit card back online. After that, the same young male employee called again and threatened to prosecute me if I did not give them my card number right away. (I went to the office after work to check my face and asked for my name. I-haul companies really need to train their staff on how to treat customers, and if this is the case with others, I strongly recommend sending them a letter rather than talking on the phone.

Very disappointed and will be sending photos to corporate because throwing away thousands of dollars is not acceptable.

Molly G | Overall ExperienceUnfortunately, my storage unit was infested with rats. I found out when I went to pick up a few pieces of furniture while 7 months pregnant. I alerted the office and let them know everything in my unit was covered in rat feces and they didn't offer any assistance. I asked if my husband could come and discard of all my furniture in the trash onsite to avoid paying for a moving truck, and they wouldn't allow that. I emailed the manager to alert him of the problem, and asked to stop being charged for the unit under the circumstances, and that I would arrange for movers to come clear my unit and haul everything to a dump (being 7 months pregnant, it wasn't even safe for me to be near the unit with all the rat feces). He never responded to me until close to 4 months later when I finally put a block on Uhaul charges with my cc company. I was finally able to clear out the unit and every piece of furniture is destroyed. I'm very disappointed in the lack of service from the Uhaul office staff, the manager for ignoring all emails regarding the infestation, and the fact that they continued to charge me for the unit. I lost close to $5K all in with the storage fees, cost to move everything to a dump, and the furniture that was ruined.

But that's not enough, I'm a lawyer and I'll sue UHaul if you don't correct the charges you billed me. One of your guys claims to have seen me damage the truck and therefore, charged me 324$ instead of the 34$ or something which I expected. Upon returning the truck earlier than expected, driving less miles...he went out and inspected the truck and told me you can take off...so I took off...but later that day he emailed me a receipt with 324$! He will have to explain to the court, what he meant by "you can leave now, all is okay", and I left after he said this, rather than discuss any damages he might have found. I've sent a complaint to service@uhaul, no response; I'll send a mail to Uhaul CEO this week...and then I'll take up the issue with the court. Uhaul will end up paying more than you took from me. I've used uhaul multiple times, in Texas, in Pittsburgh...this is the first time I got such disservice, and I'm not happy. See you in court if you refund.

I called to confirm the day before my reservation date and the first man I spoke with said he didn't see my reservation in the system. Then I spoke with a woman who said I was all good for my reservation. I arrived the next day and the man working at the front desk seemed a little confused, but then called his manager and without telling me anything took my information and we walked out to go see my new storage unit. He walked me to a non drive-up unit and said that was all they had (even though I reserved a drive-up unit). I let him know this wouldn't work since I have heavy bulky furniture that I need to put into storage. He then said that there is another unit that just needs to be cleaned that I should be able to have, walked me over to that unit, put the key on and told me that was all he needed from me and that I could leave. While he did the best that he was able to do, I am annoyed that the manager's advice was to just give me a different type of unit without asking me if that was okay. I also have no paperwork or email confirmation showing my new storage unit and am hesitant to even use it, in fear that he didn't change anything in the system and the unit that I am in will be given to someone else.. I don't understand where the communication went wrong but I don't feel good about this experience and storing my items in the unit with so many unanswered questions.
Lindsay W | First ImpressionsWe had to move my 82 mother in law out with 2 days notice (evicted!) and it took 2 days to do. Entire staff was very friendly and helpful. Husband and I are almost 60. The first day it was just my husband and I. It was too short notice to enlist anyone we knew to help - folks gotta work! On the second day of the move we just could not unload the truck ourselves. We had help in WVA loading up the truck but absolutely had no strength to unload to the storage. That is when I called Uhaul to see if they knew anyone to help. The manager arranged two young men to help us. Of course we paid them. This was above and beyond. This staff is the best, Chanelle, Joe (?) the manager, everyone who helped! I am sorry I don't know all their names! Chanelle can tell you. I wish the all the best during this hard time of Covid and will use again if needed!

Lien P | Overall ExperienceUpon clearing out my storage unit, I went to the office to check out. I provided my access card to the person at the counter and was told I was good to go. I checked the status the next day and the unit was still active so I called and was assured I would be checked out. I then requested a move out online just to be sure. After a couple weeks of waiting, the rental was still showing active. I called the location again and was ensured it would be taken care of. A few days later, I received an email saying my rent was overdue. I called the 800 number because the location had not been helpful. All they did was send an email to the manager requesting this be closed out. The next day I called the location and was told the manager was not available but they would leave a message requesting the rental be completed. The next day I received an email saying a late charge was being applied to my account for not paying rent for a unit I had been out of for over 2 weeks and requested 7 times to be done with. It was only when I replied to this email and indicated I would not be paying one penny more for a unit I have been trying to check out of for weeks that the checkout was FINALLY completed. This was either an attempt to get me to pay more money than I owed or just total incompetence on EVERY employee I interacted with when trying to close this out. Completely unacceptable. I will not be using uhaul ever again.

Three particular evens showed this locations quality. One when moving the truck the employee bumped the mirror and he promptly retrieved a sticker and marked it with out me saying that I saw this. So A+ for honesty. Two I closed out before the start of the new month but my auto pay had already gone through for the month. The manager was able to set this right. So A+ for doing the right thing, follow though, and reasonableness. Three I found that the store was well stocked and well priced. So that was convenient. Overall this is an excellent uhaul location and helps make the stressful time of moving and storing manageable.

This location does typically stays busy. So the process of waiting and renting does usually take 15-25 mins depending on how busy they are.
