Booked 5 weeks in advance for a 12pm to 7 pm slot. Called by office at 11am of the day to be told nothing available till 2pm and your paperwork said pick up at 2pm. I have the confirmation that shows 12pm pick up. Arrived at 2pm the small truck i needed not available so given a larger one that was too high for the entrance i needed. Drove 4 miles to my destination to discover the lock was broken and had to return to your location to have security man break open lock with hammer. Lost 40 minutes on rental and 8 extra miles that i am being charged for. I look forward to your reply and offer od refund amount for my inconvenience.PAUL L.

The staff did not pay attention to certain things. We were told that the truck was full of gas. It was not. We took the truck 17 miles and ended up putting $22 worth of gas in it which does not equal out to the 17 miles that we used. When we brought it up to the staff, they were rude and claimed that they were not wrong. That it was full. On May 22 I drove 3.5 hours from out of state and had a previously secured reservation for a 7.5 x 10 climate controlled storage unit at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul storage facility. The initial unit I was provided was occupied. After another second floor unit was finally identified I found out the elevator was broken. It appeared that this was related to the fire alert feature of the elevator which continually beeped, had a flashing red light and kept the elevator on the first floor. I mentioned this to the office staff who told me this happens all the time (sounds like a safety/fire code issue to me). I was told my options were to carry my stuff upstairs or pay more money for the same size unit on the first floor. I requested they honor the pricing on my reservation due to this inconvenience and was told it was not their fault their elevator was not working and they refused (I never heard of a business not taking responsibility for not having basic functioning equipment that is integral to the service they provide). Due to the inconvenience I requested that they escalate this to the manager who was not on site at the time. She was called but refused to honor my pricing. While at the Elmwood Avenue location I attempted to call U-Haul customer service but didn’t get through to a representative due to unacceptable hold times in excess of 30 minutes. This whole situation seemed like a classic bait and switch scenario and I decided to take my business elsewhere to a storage facility that actually cared about their customers. I spent in excess of 2.5 hours trying to work this out at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul location which also included calling, securing and driving to a competing facility. This was a very bad experience which suggested that U-Haul does not care about my time or my business. This is particularly disappointing since I have 4 U-Haul equipment rentals between May and August. Based on this negative experience I would never use the Elmwood Avenue storage facility and would highly discourage anyone else from doing so.Enid B. | Overall Experience

I was scheduled for a 15' truck and was told when I arrived I would have (and need to pay extra for) a 20' truck. I did not need or want a 20' truck. When opening the back of the 20' truck I saw there were no tie down straps. There were also no tie down straps available in the store of warehouse. So I was switched from the 20' truck to a 15' truck that I wanted in the first place. It had (2) tie down straps that required me to go to Home Depot in Columbia SC to buy 2 additional straps and a Master Lock to lock the trucks back latch as one was not suggested or provided. Otherwise, the truck was in good working order and the trip went well. The lady I worked with was very patient, and persistent to get everything squared away before I left, so no blame on her. It would be helpful for Uhaul not to take a reservation for the correct truck if they can not hold (keep) the reservation.GARY J.

This has been my second truck rental with uhaul, recently. Both times have been at the Elmwood location. During both times, the fuel and mileage were off prior to the rental. The first time, when I went out to inspect the truck. I found the fuel and mileage wrong. I went right back to the counter and the door was locked and everybody was gone. I had to wait for 15 minutes for someone to come back to the office but the office was filled with four employee's during the rental. Ms. Green was the one that handled the rental and displayed complete professionalism and great customer service skills but stated that she was going to lunch after the rental everyone else must have went on lunch or break too. Finally, an employee did come out and take a picture of it. The rental this time was different. The counter person was being rude and was upset because of something that Ms. Green was on the phone handling. she would talk to me rudely and then turn around and speak to a fellow employee, politely, with Ms. Green sitting next to her. It started with her stating numerously that they did not have an furniture dolly. i stated okay but after she repeated it. I stated, well what do you want me to do. You don't have a dolly. I went out to the truck and the fuel was wrong, I immediately returned and she told me to take a picture of it. I stated that I would like someone to come out and look at it. I took a picture of the fuel and Ms. Green signed off on it but no one came out to look at it. I was frustrated and left because I do not work for uhaul. Ms. Green has a great personality and great customer skills but the management of the facility is unreal. I reserved a storage locker on line to later find out that it was none available. This place is unreal. I was charged for 79 miles and went less than 10 miles. unbelievable. i can try to secure cc video from the storage facility and several witnesses to attest to time and location. thanks for your effort in this matter.Terence W.

There is nit adequate parking which delays check out and check in the variable for parking spaces to customer is unmatched especially since this is also self storage no one is going to park inside the gate to go in to the office and this location is always understaffed. Also the on lone check in has a 15 min delay before it initiates the check in/check out screen. This is the first occurrence for the delay not the other couple of tomes I rented a truck from this location the keys were not in a lock box as they are at all other locations why offer the convenience of on line or mobile check in only to have to go inside to obtain the keys in which ever occasion except 5/8 all of the info I completed with my on line reservation the rep at the location took sll the info again invluding scanning my card from a mobile device, 5/8 I explained to the rep I had recently tecovered from COVID and was not comfortable coming inside he was gracious and brought the key out to the van as he too and his family had COVID just 3 months prior so he understood my cautiousness Overall this was the worse experience Ive had at this location since my first rental last February and I assure you this will also be the last time I use that location as well and possibly no longer use U Haul as a whole since there seems to always be a discrepancy on the mileageTemia H.

The entire moving experience was the worst I have had in a lifetime. Uhaul made several (4) major errors that caused us stress and loss of sleep. Not once did they take responsibility for their mistakes. Right down to the Elmwood location not having the car tow confirmed with us the day before. When one was found Uhaul gave us 15 minutes to get to the location to pick it up or loose the rental. The only ray of sunshine during the entire experience was the gal that worked at the Elmwood location. She was a pleasure to talk with. I was moving my 22 year old daughter from South Carolina to Texas. That in itself was stressful enough. Add that to the fact that Uahul had incorrectly taken my name and email down incorrectly. The young man who served me on Friday gave me the wrong truck. When I started to head out this morning, I noticed my paperwork did not match up with the truck. Since I was driving by the U-Haul place on the way out I stopped in to get it corrected. The young lady who was very polite, professional, and helpful, told me I was given their day truck, rather than the one I was supposed to get. Moreover, the one I was supposed to get was no longer there and I could not take the one I was given on my one way trip. She gave me a 15' truck at the same price. July 15, 2020 Glen K. LaConey, Plaintiff, v. Jacqueline Matthews, Defendant. Re: DEMAND FOR PAYMENT Via Electronic Mail COMES NOW, the undersigned Plaintiff, Glen K. LaConey (“LaConey”), a customer of UHaul Self-Storage (“UHaul”), situated at 1037 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, South Carolina 29201, seeking remedial and compensatory relief, based upon a pattern of harassment perpetrated by a Jacqueline Matthews (“Matthews”) against LaConey; and denial of authorized access to LaConey’s self-storage unit; and failure of Matthews to provide a climate-controlled environment for LaConey’s unit, while acting under, and by exceeding her authority as General Manager of UHaul. The facts in support of the within complaint are as follows: BACKGROUND: LaConey has been leasing self-storage Unit #E236 from UHaul since early 2019. UHaul represents that it is a “Climate Controlled” facility. The access hours are posted conspicuously. In late 2019, Matthews was assigned as the Manager of UHaul. Immediately after assuming her assignment as Manager, Matthews began a campaign of harassment against LaConey and certain other UHaul customers as follows: 1. Matthews has persistently locked the courtesy restrooms, then denied LaConey the key to the restrooms, on the pretext that “the lock is not working”. Customers have urinated in the stairwells and other areas of the facility, presumably for the same reason, as evidenced by the numerous threatening notes posted by Matthews, which LaConey has obtained. 2. Matthews, and other UHaul personnel, have persistently, and discriminately locked the doors to the inside units up to one (1) hour before the prescribed time, without notice, thereby denying inside customers access to their units, to the exclusion of customers leasing outside units. Matthews intimidates inside customers by hovering nearby with her arms folded, and demanding that all customers exit the building immediately, under threat of eviction. Matthews has been observed yelling to customers with inside units, “I’m tired! I’m ready to go home! I’ll lock up whenever the [expletive] I want to! I don’t give a [expletive]!” Effectively, customers with outside units enjoy unfettered access, once they pass through the security gate, to the prejudice of customers with inside units. Such arbitrary, discriminate and abusive practices perpetrated for the mere convenience of UHaul staff, are inconsistent with necessary safety and security measures outlined in the lease agreement; yet, they are consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 3. As stated above, UHaul represents that it is a “Climate Controlled” facility; however, the temperature inside Building E, where LaConey’s unit is situated, persistently exceeds 100 degrees F. Matthews utterly refuses to take corrective action, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 4. Most recently, Matthews has discriminately selected customers, who enter through the security gate on foot, to sign a logbook, to the exclusion of customers who drive through the gate, and/or who lease outside units, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. LaConey’s claim is supported by video surveillance. ARGUMENTS: LaConey contends that Matthews has exceeded the bounds of her authority as General Manager of UHaul in furtherance of a personal agenda against LaConey. LaConey further contends that the discriminatory, prejudicial and abusive practices of Matthews, constitutes harassment, are violative of the lease agreement, and may violate the Civil Rights Act. Thus, because Matthews acted in her personal capacity to further a personal agenda, LaConey enjoys the prerogative to sue Matthews individually, and in her personal capacity, in lieu of suit in arbitration. CONCLUSION: Should this matter not be resolved to the satisfaction of LaConey, LaConey shall seek punitive damages in addition to the relief sought. Any evidence developed, during suit(s) against Matthews, shall be used against UHaul Corporation in arbitration. Matthews shall have twenty (20) days to respond to this demand before the matter proceeds to the magistrate’s court. RELIEF SOUGHT: 1. Remuneration of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) for the improper denial of storage access and for denial of a climate-controlled environment. 2. That Matthews post the permanently restricted access hours in a conspicuous location within five (5) business days of receipt of this transmittal; and to timely post notice of any further access restrictions, accordingly. 3. That Matthews cease and desist any, and all forms of harassment against, and abuse of UHaul customers. 4.
