Just make sure you communicate thoroughly with third-party moving companies you employ for delivering boxes! When my third-party local moving crew arrived to drop off my U-box, they also needed to unload for me, because my area did not give me the option of having the box left in my driveway for me to unload myself - but the unload moving crew apparently was not told that my U-box would be bolted shut for security. They had no correct tools to break open the box's bolts, and since neither did I at my place, they had to take the U-box all the way back to their HQ to get something before returning to me for the unloading process! Could have saved time if they had been told that a long distance U-box would be bolted shut in 5 different places that would require a very specific type of wrench to open!!Emily F.
I originally booked online a truck rental that I would have picked up with in 3 miles of my home. Uhaul booked this rental online. I then received a telephone call informing me that I had to travel 30 miles round trip to a location out of state to rent this truck. Quite simply unacceptable. The Unit I rented via online move-in had apparently already been rented to someone else, and a computer error allowed me to book it. There were no comparable units available so I took a smaller one. I didn't have any problem with the service in N Smithfield, RI once everything arranged after so many phone calls made to the store in RI. Whenever I dialed RI store number, I end up speaking Rep from nationwide service who couldn't answer my question. It was very frustrating to talk to people who doesn't know the store which I used their service year before. I understand because of emergency Pandemic situation but what I don't understand when I dialed local store number directly why national network agents has to answer the phone. Only issue I had was not getting the size vehicle I reserved 2 weeks prior to date needed. Was called the day before that I had to go to another location to get the size I needed. I opted to go with a smaller unit as I didn't feel I should have to travel into Massachusetts to get what I had reserved at this location. Why make a reservation if they aren't going to honor it. after speaking with corporate and then customer service as I am unable to reach the North Smithfield store by phone. I was very alarmed to see this morning that I had been charged a $20 fee for dropping off the UHaul I rented yesterday at the time that I indicated I would. I was unable to put gas into the truck so I was fine with paying the fuel $4/gallon, but I was told to simply put my keys in the lockbox when I returned with the van. I was never told that I would have a fee for not putting information into my phone when I dropped off the van otherwise I definitely would have done so to avoid this charge. I did not know it even mattered that I dropped it off after hours as I was told it was fine to bring it back "at any point tonight" and not even that it was to be there at 7:30, which it was. I am quite shell shocked at the total cost this experience has resulted in. I went to pick up an armchair down the street with a value of less than the UHaul experience has been at this point. I thought renting this truck would be about $20 plus the 0.69 cents per mile, and somehow I've landed at $97. I am requesting that the service charge be removed as I was never told about it otherwise I would have done everything in my power to avoid it, since $70 was already far over what I imagined.Carly N.

I rent these vans on a regular basis. The last two times the van was dirty. I even found someones covid test paperwork! They are not even wiped down. This U-Haul location is the best U-Haul location in my opinion, and I have been a customer of U-Haul periodically since the 1980's! The truck I used was awful. Paint falling off, dings and dents everywhere, and worst of all the steering alignment was down right dangerous. I had to take the truck on the highway and it was very difficult to stay in a lane. Also the self check in all needs improvement. After some confusion, the N. Smithfield agent pivoted quickly and made the situation better than expected. I had called earlier in the week and was told the unit was on the ground floor. I asked the person to verify three times because I was told prior it was on the second floor and only a 5x10 unit was available on the first floor. Upon arrival, we were correctly informed the unit was on the mezzanine up 10 steps. No good, especially considering we were storing an upright piano (500 lbs.) Next issue: I had ordered the 5x8 trailer from the N Smithfield location for expediency purposes, then it got unilaterally changed to Cumberland. This added an extra 90 minutes to/fro twice of waste. As you probably know, wasting time on a moving day is not a good thing. Thankfully the person at Cumberland and N. Smithfield were very kind, polite and professional. If they had been disasters, the rating would have been POOR mainly due to the jerking around of reservations and conveyance of inaccurate information leading to undue stress. However, the EXCELLENT onsite agents saved the rating and greatly reduced the stressful situation. U-Haul REALLY needs to get the people with COMMON SENSE and CUSTOMER ORIENTATION on the phone and within reservations. Eventually more and more customers will realize there are other options with equivalent or less induced stress. This type of silliness undermines the U-Haul trade mark. Ultimately the behavior will lead to a Hertz-like business collapse. The customer interface must be crisp on all fronts to be long term successful. Best regards.Sam M. | First Impressions
