Adaptive Reuse in Kansas City, MO at U-Haul Moving & Storage of Power & Light

Building History

In 1916, a beautiful six story brick building was constructed in Kansas City for the Duff and Repp Furniture Company. The Duff and Repp Furniture Co. was known for selling high quality furniture pieces for the era. An article from 1917 provides a glimpse into the original interior layout of the 1520 Locust street showroom building, "Nowhere in the big establishment has the conventional aisle arrangement been used in floor display. The stock is grouped largely in informal settings but so tastefully is this done, so blended are the colorings of walls, ceilings woods and upholstering fabrics that the decorative effect is singularly attractive.".

U-Haul acquired the property in 1976 and now provides self-storage, retail space and truck and trailer sharing. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
