Adaptive Reuse in LEXINGTON, KY at U-HAUL MOVING & STORAGE OF MASTERSON STATION

Building History
Founder and former CEO of Big Ass Fans, Carey Smith, had originally worked with a company to supply large fans to farms. The leading research indicated that if cows were kept cool, they would eat more food and therefore produce more milk. Smith imagined that the large fans could be practical for other applications as well. HVLS Fan Co., standing for "High Volume Low Speed", was born in 1999 and he quickly began providing fans to many different industries. Customers would call HVLS and ask, "Are you guys the ones with the big ass fans?" and that's how the company inherited its amusing and well-known modern name.
In 2008, the company expanded to sell and install large industrial fans in commercial air-conditioned spots. Big Ass Fans also expanded into residential markets by creating the Haiku premium ceiling fan brand in 2012. Big Ass Fans are now found in restaurants, warehouses, grocery stores, gyms, horse arenas, airports, etc.
The former Big Ass Fans building was constructed in 1985. U-Haul acquired the building in 2018 for adaptive reuse. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
