Adaptive Reuse in Augusta, GA at U-Haul Moving & Storage at Broad St

Serving U-Haul customers since 1978, this facility was built through Adaptive Reuse of an abandoned building.

Building History

The Claussens brand is particularly known for pickles that have a satisfying crunch. It is this level of pickle perfection that has allowed them to remain a popular household brand since 1870. The original pickle company, C. F. Claussen & Sons, was founded by Claus Claussen Sr. in Chicago in May 1870. Mr. Claussen was a vegetable farmer on land just outside of the Chicago city limits. One year he had a surplus of cucumbers and decided to pickle them for sale. The pickles were a success and Mr. Claussen was able to continue to grow and produce pickles on the same plot of land until 1976. In 1976, the company was purchased by Oscar Mayer and pickle production was moved Woodstock, Illinois. Oscar Mayer was later acquired by General Foods and then also merged with Kraft Foods in 1995. The Claussens pickle building was built in 1917 and U-Haul acquired the hostorical building in 1978.
