Adaptive Reuse in Buffalo, NY at U-Haul Moving & Storage at Genesee

Building History

Acme supermarket was originally founded in 1891 by two Irish immigrant entrepreneurs, Mr. Robinson and Mr. Crawford. The first store ever opened was located in South Philadelphia, but the company now operates 177 stores throughout Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. In 1917, Robinson and Crawford strategically merged Acme Markets with four other Philadelphia-area grocery stores and created a new company named American Stores.  Since 1999,  the Acme supermarkets have actually become a subsidiary of the popular Albertsons supermarkets. The Buffalo Acme supermarket building was built in 1975 and U-haul proudly acquired the building in 1977. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
