Horrible experience. First I was told the truck I reserved over a month prior would not be available at the location by my home. I had scheduled to pick up the truck at 8 am, across the street from my home. Instead, I had to call a cab for a 35 minute drive to a location that did not even open until 9 am. The truck had a check engine light on when it was given to me. The MANAGER response was that I should call roadside assistance or take it to a shop. Neither are my responsibility. I paid for a truck to be ready, maintained, and clean. I informed the manager that they needed to correct the problem because I was not comfortable taking a 26' truck 500+ miles when it clearly had a problem. After 1.5 hours of the staff being on the phone with roadside assistance (they were on hold for 45 minutes) and corporate, the solution was that I should take the truck home and a mechanic would come to my residence to check and clear the engine light. While packing up my home (3 hours behind schedule and the cost of a 35 minute cab ride down) I got a call from corporate that I needed to call roadside assistance because they couldn't communicate with that devision for me. I was on hold for 30 minutes. I didn't have any more time to waste on the problem you all handed me so I hung up and called the pickup location and explained the situation. They said they would handle it and when they called me back the excuse they had was that "corporate had lied to them" when they said a mechanic would be sent to my home. I then received another call from a corporate manager and I informed her I didn't have time to sit on hold and that I had informed UHaul of the problem and it was up to them to fix it. If the truck engine blew or broke down, I would not be held responsible. The whole experience was terrible. The only reason I didn't walk away and leave the truck was because I had to complete my move that day. Bottom line, I am the customer. It was wrong to give me a product that needed maintenance and tell me to do it. I would appreciate a call from someone with the authority to address the situation. 615-945-9191

Advanced property maintenance did a fantastic job. The trailer was ready, BJ helped set everything up. However, during my two experiences with U-Haul in the past month, I learned that U-Haul developed a ordering management system that was pushed out to retail locations, that is too complicated for retail folks to use. In the last reservation, at Havana store (A U-Haul company franchise also having storage) it took about an hour and a half to pick up a trailer due to the complexity of the system, with three people ahead of me. I also preferred to pay Credit rather than PIN-based at the Company store. Because of my desire to use VISA, Richard, the manager at Havana had to re-do the contract. The system takes storage payments, and was likely originally supposed to be only for a call center environment. On this specific reservation, I was double-charged and customer service reviewed the contract, agreed I was double-charged and also could not directly issue a refund even though they said "someone didn't click a check box to 'extend' a drop off". It took 8 days to reverse the charges. I imagine U-Haul has a lot of reversed charges and re-work due to the application being designed for call centers. What I'd do is re-evaluate the specific needs of retail locations so people can quickly and efficiently take payments. Also, I'd introduce software logic to extend rental periods as a default instead of duplicating and creating contracts. I saw on the emailed contract that a voice authorization to my credit account was also needed for a $4.00 charge. This adds additional fees. Voice Authorizations typically cost triple the normal "swiped card" rate in credit card transaction costs and settlement fees. That was also refunded, and I'm satisfied. The personal attention and service provided at both locations (Both the Company owned location and Gilbert) was great. That said however, with a few small tweaks to business (and web application) logic driven by thoughtful analysis of retail store needs for a much easier web application would be GREAT for anyone who chooses U-Haul for an easy and quick way to donate things to Goodwill and charity. :) This rings especially true when the customer is in the store.

I've used this place plenty and this is my first issue. When they signed the truck out to me they said to return it with the gas at half. I drove the truck out about a mile when I noticed it was barely above a quarter. I immediately took a picture as proof. I called 3 times and had to leave a message all three times with no return phone call. They then charged me $37+ in gas fees. Still trying to resolve. I still have the picture.
