Jack SIt appears that little to no safety inspection was performed before this truck was rented out again. We were given a 20-foot U-Haul truck that was marked as having a half tank of fuel, but shortly after leaving we discovered it had less than 5 miles of range remaining. The reason became alarmingly clear: there was a hole in the gas tank, causing fuel to leak out onto the roadway. We have video evidence showing gasoline actively spilling from the truck. This wasn't just an inconvenience—it was an extremely dangerous situation. A leaking gas tank poses a serious fire and explosion risk, not only to renters but also to every driver sharing the road. The fact that this vehicle was rented out in this condition raises serious concerns about U-Haul's inspection and safety procedures. To make matters worse, we spent our own money filling the tank, only to have that fuel immediately leak out. With fuel prices as high as they are, this was a significant and completely avoidable expense. When we requested reimbursement for the wasted fuel and asked whether the fuel for the replacement truck could be credited, both requests were denied. As if that wasn't enough, after experiencing such a serious mechanical failure, we felt compelled to purchase the damage waiver on the replacement rental for additional peace of mind—an expense we never anticipated and should not have had to incur. What should have been a simple rental turned into a costly, stressful, and potentially catastrophic experience. Renting out a truck with a leaking gas tank is not just poor customer service; it is a major safety hazard that could have resulted in a fire, explosion, serious injuries, or worse.
