On Friday July 8, 2016 I rented Ford Transit Van BE 4318F (AG90968 AZ) at 8:03 AM on Contract 89883121 from U-Haul Branch 817020 on Route 37E in Tom’s River, NJ. I was most ably assisted by Linda. I would like to state that she was most helpful in selecting the best van for the job of transporting a 1946 Harley-Davidson from Newtown, PA to JFK Airport. Unfortunately when she read the gas gage she was standing outside the van and the parallax made it look like the tank was 7/8 full. I discovered that in fact it was ¾ full the moment I sat in the driver’s seat and checked the gage. I spoke to the manager on duty and he instructed Breen to check it and correct it if I was correct. Breen got in, checked it and corrected the outgoing contract (signed copy of corrected contract available. As I left the parking lot Linda was outside so I called her over and showed her the gage reading. She apologized and I noted it was no big thing. When I returned to Toms River with the van I stopped at an Exxon Station on the opposite side of Route 37E from the U-Haul Branch. I had a great deal of difficulty with the pump attendant filling the tank to ¾ and not filling it. At any rate when I left the Exxon station the gas gage indicator was EXACTLY where it was when I picked up the van that morning. I hurried to the U-Haul location and walked in about 5 minutes before eight. There was a young couple in front of me who were just finishing up their business, I reached the counter and noted to a heavy set young man that I needed a bit of help getting a few things out of the van. His response was “we’re closing in three minutes.” It was glaringly obvious that he DID NOT want to get involved for fear of having to work a few moments beyond 8:00 PM. I then pointed out the fact that I was on crutches and that I brought the van back that evening for two reasons: 1) I had other things to do Saturday morning and 2) I felt that U-Haul might need the van for a rental early the next day. At any rate the heavyset young man decided he would help me transfer the items from the van to my car. He noted that the computers were all down and that I would receive a final invoice via email the next day. I noted that was fine and I thanked him as I pulled out of the U-Haul lot at 8:05 PM. The next day when I checked the email I noted that I had been charged $7.50 for two gallons of gasoline. That displeased me a great deal and I decided to visit the U-Haul branch and make my displeasure known. When I got there Linda was there and I explained that I had a problem with being charged $7.50 for two gallons of gasoline when I had left the Exxon station a couple of blocks down the road from the U-Haul branch with the gas gage indicator was EXACTLY where it was when I picked the van up. As noted above I had other things to do so when Linda told me she would fix the problem I thanked her and left. To date I have yet to see a credit of $7.50 on my credit card. When I arrived I waited for a few moments for someone to come up to me as I assumed I needed to be checked in but someone came up to me and explained that since I already paid I could just leave. Did not realize this, maybe that should be more explicit, but liked the service and I would use this rental again. Thank you , a satisfied customer

The interior of the cab where we sat smelled really bad of cat urine. A person from uhaul did come out and spray a cleaner and wiped down the seats but it did not go away. Other than that the truck ran perfect and was clean. Also, when we called to reserve a truck we were given a special rate but when we were charged for it we did not get the rate quoted. It was about a $12.00 difference from what we were told. We did get the extra mileage they offered since our pick up location was changed do to unavailability of the first place we were to pick up. I would still rent from uhaul in the future and the overall experience was good.

Initially, I made a reservation to pick up a truck in a different location. I was rerouted to this one because it was unavailable. That was fine and my initial conversation with a woman on the phone went great, she was accommodating and explained what happened, even told me she had upgraded the truck at no cost. Additionally, she told me that the mileage allowance would be doubled as well. Great! But when I went to pick up the truck, the two individuals behind the desk were different in their customer service styles. The younger man who directly helped me seemed to lean to an older woman for answers at times, this would be fine, except that the older woman didn't display the best customer service standards herself. I said that I knew the mileage had been doubled because there wasn't a truck available at the location I had originally picked and asked if there was any gas allowance too (since I'd be driving 20 more miles now). The young man responded with an 'I can't do that now you can call customer service to ask later' and the older woman said something smart to the effect of 'well you might sit in 2 hours of traffic whether you rented here or 20 miles down the road.' That wasn't the quesrion I was asking but I wasn't in the mood to get into an argument. There also was an issue with the amount of blankets they had on hand and the older woman was directing the younger man how to handle it (again, in not the most customer service positive sort of way) right in front of me. (Not to mention that I requested 12 blankets and after putting them on my receipt, they only had 6 in stock.) Last of all, it was clear that the older woman cared very much about the bottom line. Another couple had come in and we're thinking about adding a handtruck to their order. The older woman was unclear about whether they actually took the hand truck or not (they didn't) but was going to make sure and put it on their bill. This makes sense, but instead of being rude to the couple while they were deciding and helping them understand it would be easy to add to their final bill, I watched a rude interaction occur when the male customer was asking about pricing. I can't say for sure that they got an even worse customer service experience because of their skin color, but based on the way I felt leaving the store, I'd believe it. Maybe the older woman was just having a bad day, maybe I caught her after all of the employees were given a talk about making sure they charge for every piece of extra equipment, maybe I can make up an excuse for her, but I just think that the whole location could use a customer service lesson. I also want to mention that I have rented from UHaul for years and just recently had experiences with Uhaul in Newark, NJ and Lakewood, NJ (I even happened to break my ankle on their property) and they were GENUINE, WELCOMING and added the personal touch (not an easy thing to do when you're a rental location). Reserving online is a flawed system. All the info attached to my reservation # was wrong including the state I was going to pick up in. Just call where you plan to pick up.

The cargo area of my rental had a serious leak. When it rained the water entered into the cargo area and turned my queen sized mattress into a giant sponge. The attendant Linda observed some of the water on the floor and discounted the use of the vehicle. I have spent the evening treating the mattress for the water damage. Linda was very kind and professional. Also the front bumper of the vehicle looked like it had been beaten up before I rented it.

I had a problem with the person in Georgia who made my registration. Her name was Leslie. She quoted me a price of $101.60 TOTAL for the rental, insurance and tax. I ask several times and she said yes total everything included. When I picked up the van they said it was $125.96. I paid it and said I would take it up later I needed the truck at this point. I feel I should be refunded the difference of what I was quoated by Leslie (said it was recorded) and what I was charged.

I had a fairly easy experience with my rental. My sales person answered all my questions and was friendly. I witnessed several customers not knowing what they wanted and salespeople doing their best to help them. I think customers should be better prepared instead of walking in there clueless. I was. So should they.
