Get To Know Your Classic 15-Foot U-Haul Truck

Whether it’s your first time in the driver’s seat of a U-Haul truck or you’re a seasoned do-it-yourself mover, it’ll be helpful to brush up on your familiarity with the vehicle you’re driving.

Here’s a breakdown of the dashboard lights and gauges in your classic 15-foot U-Haul truck.

  1. Air Bag: If this light stays on while the vehicle is running, then there is a fault in the system. Have the truck’s system serviced as soon as possible.
  2. Seat Belt: This illuminates to remind you to fasten your seat belt. A reminder chime will also sound.
  3. Check Engine Light: If this light is flashing, then the detected condition is currently in progress. Stop the vehicle when safe to be serviced as soon as possible. If this light is solid with no operating concerns, then the truck can just be serviced when returned.
  4. Tow Haul: This light turns on when the tow/haul feature is enabled. If this light is flashing, then have the truck’s system serviced as soon as possible. This may otherwise result in damage to the vehicle’s transmission.
  5. Traction Control: This light will remain off when traction control is enabled, but will begin flashing during a traction control event. If this light stays on while the vehicle is running, then the traction control system will need to be serviced. If the traction control system is turned off using the switch on the console, then the “TCS Off” light will be illuminated.
  6. Anti-Theft System: This light turns on or begins flashing when the anti-theft system is activated. If this light stays on or flashes while the vehicle is running, then there may be a system malfunction. Have the truck’s system serviced as soon as possible.
  7. Parking Brake: This illuminates when the parking brake is engaged.
  8. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS): If this light stays on or begins flashing while the vehicle is running, then there may be a system malfunction. Have the truck’s system serviced as soon as possible. Normal braking will still be functional unless the Brake System Warning Light is also illuminated.
  9. High Beam Indicator: This illuminates when the high beam lights are turned on.
  10. Oil Change Required: This illuminates in the message center when an oil change is due. The truck will be serviced at its normal mileage intervals.
  11. Wrench Light: This illuminates in the message center when the engine has detected a powertrain malfunction. Have the truck’s system served as soon as possible.
  12. Cruise Control: This illuminates when cruise control is turned on.
  13. Traction Control System Off: This illuminates when the traction control system is turned off.
