Just enter details about your home, choose pickup or shipping, and the app will build you a list of recommended supplies that you can adjust before checkout.

Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of how the U-Haul Moving Supplies Calculator works.

How to Use the Moving Supplies Calculator in the U-Haul App

  • Open the U-Haul App, navigate to the “Tools” tab, then select “Moving Supplies Calculator” to get started.
  • Add rooms, closets, mattresses, and storage areas, such as garages or basements, so that the moving calculator can estimate what you’ll need.
  • Under “Recommended Items,” see suggested boxes and supplies, tweak quantities if needed, then choose between in-store pickup or shipping to place your order.

Start on the Home tab of the U-Haul App. Navigate to the “Tools” tab, then select “Moving Supplies Calculator. Alternatively, under “Products & Services”, tap “Moving Supplies”. You’ll be taken to a screen showing popular moving box options. Scroll past the supply categories like boxes, covers, and bags until you see the Supply Calculator.

Step 1: Enter Your ZIP Code and Delivery Preference

The calculator begins with a quick setup step so it knows how you want your supplies. Select your delivery method, either pickup or shipping. If you select pickup, enter your ZIP code then tap “Show Locations” and choose the U-Haul location that works best for you. The list automatically updates based on your ZIP code, so you can search for locations near home, work, or wherever is most convenient for you.

Step 2: Fill Out the “Your Home” Section

Next, scroll to “Your Home” and enter details such as:

  • If your home has more, fewer, or an average amount of belongings
  • Number of bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms
  • Number of other rooms, such as offices or dining spaces

Step 3: Review Your Recommended Moving Supplies

After entering your home details, switch to “Recommended Items”, which is right next to the “Your Home” tab.

  • Recommended packing supplies
  • Estimated quantities
  • Pricing for each item

You’ll see all of the calculator’s suggested moving and packing supplies based on your input. You can still adjust quantities as needed, especially if you already have moving boxes or plastic bins< from a box exchange program or by sourcing them elsewhere. Either way, tweak the list until it looks right to you.

Check Which Supplies Can Be Picked Up or Shipped

Before checkout, confirm whether each item is eligible for shipping or pickup. Some supplies are pickup-only, depending on availability and location. The calculator flags those automatically, so you can either switch locations, change delivery preference, or keep the order as-is. It’s a small detail, but it saves time later.
