Adaptive Reuse: U-Haul Releases Plans for New Fargo Store

FARGO, N.D. (April 17, 2017) — A deteriorating building that sat vacant for five-plus years is being renovated by U-Haul to remove blight and offer Fargo customers more convenient moving and self-storage solutions.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of West Acres at 4901 13th Ave. S. opened a temporary showroom on Feb. 20 and currently offers truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment, moving supplies and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.

U-Haul acquired the former Sportsman’s Warehouse facility on Feb. 8. Extensive renovations will soon render 800 indoor climate-controlled self-storage units with high-tech safety features. There will be professional hitch installation and propane on the 4.85-acre lot in the near future.

“This building has been sitting vacant for more than five years and has been slowly deteriorating,” said Shawn Odden, U-Haul Company of Fargo president. “U-Haul is excited to renovate this property and bring a facelift to the area.”

The recent acquisition of the Fargo facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

Odden said U-Haul will look to fill the store with local hires to promote job growth within the Fargo community. He expects a staff of 15 or more Team Members when the facility is fully operational. U-Haul always encourages local contractors to bid on construction work.

“The addition of this location on the 13th Avenue corridor will provide our customers with a convenient location,” Odden said. “We have been underserving West Fargo. Now that we have a centrally located facility, we can reduce the length of travel for our customers.”
