U-Haul Names Houston as Top 2012 U.S. Destination City

PHOENIX (April 12, 2013) — U-Haul International, Inc., today released the results of the annual 2012 U-Haul National Migration Trend Report, titled “The U-Haul 2012 Top 50 U.S. Destination Cities.” According to moving data reflective of nationwide statistics for calendar year 2012, families moving to Houston took the No. 1 spot again, for the fourth year in a row.   For the third year in a row, Orlando, Fla. took the No. 2 spot; and Chicago and Las Vegas ranked No. 3 and 4 respectively, while San Antonio came in at No. 5, for the second year in a row.   Austin, Texas; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Philadephia, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo. and Sacramento, Calif. rounded out the top 10.

“Since 1945, U-Haul has built a long and proud history of helping Americans relocate,” said John “J.T.” Taylor, president, U-Haul International, Inc. “While recent economic conditions may have played a role as to where people have moved, our customers continue to rely on us to provide affordable services at convenient locations, which have the added benefit of reducing the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.”

The ranking reflects destinations for movers renting a truck one-way and considers every city in the country, regardless of size. However, the data is not stated as a percentage of population and is not reflective of overall growth.

The U-Haul 2012 Top 50 U.S. Destination Cities Report was compiled from more than 1.6 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions occurring during a recent 12-month period.

The annual mileage of North American U-Haul trucks, trailer rentals and tow dollies would move a family to the moon and back again more than 9.9 times per day, every day of the year and could also travel around the Earth more than 177 times per day, every day of the year.
