Is driving my vehicle with a trailer the same as driving it by itself?
– Chris S. from Indianola, IA
Your towing combination is quite different than a car by itself. It is a lot longer and heavier and requires special considerations while driving and parking. Follow these basic guidelines to compensate for the tow combination:
1. Drive at a reduced speed, when towing, than you would normally drive.
2. Be mindful of posted speed limits and never exceed 55 miles per hour.
3. Anticipate stops and allow more distance for braking.
4. Keep more space between you and vehicles ahead of you.
5. Take wider turns to avoid curbs.
6. Keep to the center of the lane to keep the trailer between the lines.
7. Give yourself more time and space to pass other vehicles.
8. Shift into lower gear going uphill.
9. Slow down before going downhill. Use a lower gear instead of riding the brakes.
10. Use extra caution in heavy traffic, construction zones and inclement weather.
11. Avoid distractions, like cell phones.
12. Be alert and wear your seat belt.
