Moving to college can be a stressful time, but there’s no need to fret. If you are preparing to move into the dorms (or even a nearby apartment) we’re going to share some special tips that will make your life easier.

First off, you should know that the dorms begin to open on August 17 and move-in dates extend through August 23rd. Different groups will have different dates, so check to find your specific date to move-in. The first  day of classes are August 26th.

Now that you’ve got that down, here’s how you can avoid the chaos and save money:

Choose an Alternate Destination: Instead of returning your truck to the city of Athens, consider one of these nearby cities as an alternate destination:moving to the University of Georgia

  • Watkinsville
  • Stratham
  • Bethlehem
  • Hull

Make a Round Trip: If you live in a nearby city like Watkinsville or Stratham, you can rent there and take the moving truck to your dorm to unload, and then return it to the same place. Avoiding the busy area of Athens will help you avoid a headache and save some money.

Move in Early or Late: If you are moving to an apartment and have the option to move in early (2 weeks at the least is ideal), then you can save a lot! These off-peak times tend to have lower rates due to better equipment availability. If you’re moving into a dorm, consider bringing the bare essentials, as if you were going on a two-week long vacation, then wait a couple of weeks to gather the rest of your furniture in the truck. Again, you’ll avoid the peak of UGA move-in, and can likely get a better deal. Additionally, if you can move mid-week instead of on a weekend, and mid-month, you will be golden!
