Top Five Overlooked Tasks When Moving

Sep 23, 2013

Anyone who’s moving can agree that it is an involved process. You’ve probably already packed your belongings, reserved your moving truck and had your utilities disconnected at your old location (or least have them scheduled for disconnect). But, certain tasks are often overlooked because they are only a small part of the moving process. This post shares important moving reminders that will help you avoid last minute stress.

Go through this list before you head to your new home.

Go through this list before moving into your new home.

1.   Internet Hookup

It’s not uncommon for a person, especially for a family, to rely on the internet for tasks related to work or school. You may only use it for entertainment purposes, but do you really want to wait for weeks in your home without the internet?

Make sure you schedule your service for a date before you’re actually in your new home. You may even want to consider signing up for a bundle with the cable company that includes your high speed internet, cable, and telephone. You’ll save money, and it’s much easier to keep track of everything when they’re all together.

2.      Change of Address

You won’t get your mail in a timely manner if you don’t file with the post office for a change of address. If you don’t have time to run to the post office, the U.S. Postal Service makes it simple by allowing you to file online.

3.      Utilities

Gas, electric, water, sewage and garbage are typical utility bills you’ll have. You must make sure that all are on at your new place. If it’s been awhile since the last tenants moved out, there’s a good chance that you might not have utilities still running in the house. You also must make sure you have all the utility bills placed in your name.

4.  School

Before you move, sign your child up for school; your child can’t begin until the process is complete which can take some time. You don’t want your child – or children – falling behind in school or having to make up days of school on the weekends just to pass.
Make sure you inquire about lunch programs and anything else that’s entailed with enrolling your children into a new school. Since it’s difficult for some children to cope with moving because of a new location or losing old friends, you want the transition to go as smooth as possible. You’ll also want to request records from your children’s old schools to have sent to the new ones.

5.      Pharmacy and Doctors

This one is especially crucial if you have health conditions that require regular treatment. Make sure you have all your health records transferred over to your new physicians and pharmacy. This includes specialists like the cardiologist or gastroenterologist. You’ll have a struggle if your records aren’t already sent over by the time you have your first appointment. Additionally, you don’t want to experience problems with your pharmacy and have to wait for them to fill your prescriptions.

Moving isn’t just about picking up the contents of your home and transferring it to a new location. There’s much more included in the process. By remembering the items above, you can make the transition a bit easier.
