In my story of moving all across the country as a college student for internships and other job opportunities, one city and one of my living places in particular stands out — my furnished place in Washington, DC. The words “pre-furnished” can be the two best words ever put on a real estate ad if you’re looking to live somewhere short term or just don’t have the nicest furniture (in my case it was both). For me, I could only fit a limited amount of stuff in my U-Box Container so pre-furnished was the way to go.
But what exactly does furnished mean? And what exactly does that mean you need to bring? Furnished can mean many different things to many different people, so it’s best to check with the landlord or property manager to find out exactly what’s in the place. We’ve compiled a list of everything else you need to bring when moving into a furnished place!
Bedroom
More than likely you’ll have a mattress and box spring, a desk of some sort and a dresser. A nightstand if you’re lucky! Be sure not to forget these items..
- Pillows
- Sheets
- Blanket
- Box Fan (if you’re like me and always need a fan)
- Mattress Topper
- Clothes Hangers
Bathroom
This room should be pretty much covered — most furnished places include a shower curtain if needed and a few bath mats. Check with your new property manager however to find out if you do need any of those items.
- Toiletries
- Soap/Shampoo
- Personal Hygiene Items
Kitchen
Where you cook is a pretty important place, so make sure that you have everything you need. Some furnished places provide pots and pans while others do not, so check with the landlord to know for sure.
- All Food Items
- Tupperware
- Cooking Utensils
- Pots and Pans (If they aren’t provided)
- Plates and Glasses (Check again on this one, may be provided)
Living Room
This room is a toss up. Most places I’ve seen have provided a couch and a chair. Some just a couch and some none, so be sure to check before you sign the lease.
- TV Cords
- Slipcover For Couch or Chair
- DVD Player
- Extension
