Protecting Your Credit Card While on the Road

Mar 28, 2014

A DIY move requires a lot of moving parts — there’s reserving the truck, picking up the moving supplies, physically packing up the house, and maybe even putting your car on a trailer. The last thing that you want to have to deal with while you’re handling all that is someone stealing your money, your identity, or bank account information. Surprisingly, it’s really easy, almost too easy, for someone to do this to you. According to Identity Theft Statistics, over 15 million Americans have their identity stolen each year.

There are a few things you can do to help reduce the risk of getting a text or call from your bank alerting you to suspicious charges.

Credit CardSecurity on the Web

Phishing, spam, malware…these are a few ways thieves will try to trick you into giving up your information online. Since you are bound to be doing some online shopping around the time of your move, whether it be for moving supplies or that flat screen TV that will look awesome in the new house, it’s important to be cognizant online.  Here’s how:

  • Use websites that have an “HTTPS” bearing — that extra “s” is what’s important because it tells you that that website is using extra security to keep your credit card info safe.
  • Stick to trusted websites for your shopping needs. If you do need to wander into the dark corners of the web, do a quick Google search and see if the website brings back any suspicious results.

Security at the Store

While on the road you’re probably going to be stopping at some new stores. Some of these stores include gas stations, restaurants or convenience stores.  Be aware of the following: ATM Keypad

  • Be sure to make a good observation of the operation and use your best judgement on whether or not it’s safe to shop.
  • Be especially cognizant at gas pumps and ATM’s — it’s not unheard of for bad guys to place card skimmers to try and capture your credit card info. If you’re ever in doubt, just head to the store across the street or down the road.

It’s also suggested to hang onto all your receipts just in case!

Rolled BillsSecurity on the Way

Moving can be stressful, and when we’re stressed we can be forgetful. You’ve more than likely have all your important documents with you — birth certificates, financial documents, marriage licenses etc. It’s extremely easy for these to fall by the wayside and get left behind. That’s why it’s extra important that you keep an eye on these, or pack them away in a box that won’t be opened until you’ve arrived at your new home. Keep these tips in mind:

  • If you have documents that you’ll need during the move, it’s recommended to put them in an envelope or zip lock bag. Stash the bag in a purse or a backpack that you will carry everywhere with you. That includes into the hotel or the restaurant for dinner.
  • Don’t leave these documents in plain sight when you’re away from your vehicle because that’s asking for trouble.
