Commercial Vehicles Follow Different Rules
In most areas, commercial vehicles are subject to their own road regulations; they follow different rules compared to normal passenger vehicles. This is why it is important to know your area’s own laws to avoid a parking ticket. Definitions vary greatly: For example, California’s classification of a commercial vehicle is one that has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or combined gross vehicle weight (CGW) of 10,001 pounds or more. However, in New York City classification depends on many factors such as weight distribution per axle, vehicle modifications, and more.
In most cases, personal moving trucks such as U-Haul vehicles do not classify as commercial vehicles since you are moving your personal belongings with them. However, some states do classify personal moving trucks as commercial vehicles due to their size and weight, so checking with a local agency is a must.

Since moving trucks can take up a lot of space in a city street, it is important to scout out where you will be doing your move and look to find parking lots nearby prior to moving day. Aside from looking for parking, keep an eye on all street signs as some may prohibit commercial vehicles. This will allow you to pick up your haul and park your vehicle accordingly in order to avoid a parking ticket. In certain places, there are “standing areas” that allow commercial vehicles to pull in and load or unload.
