#uhaulroadtrip Day 2: North Dakota

Jul 9, 2014

Thank you to everyone who stopped to say hello to us on the #uhaulroadtrip today and got a chance to check out our vintage U-Haul Camper. For those of you just joining us, see where we have been here in the #uhaulroadtrip Introduction and Day 1: Minnesota and North Dakota.

Where Did We Go?

#uhaulroadtrip day 2

Today we spent the entirety of our time in the great state of North Dakota. We started out in Grand Forks, ND and made our way to Rugby, ND. Do you know what makes the town of Rugby special? If you have ever seen the U-Haul North Dakota truck graphic you would know that Rugby is the geographic center of North America. We stopped with the other road side tourists and took some pictures.

After Rugby we made our way to Minot which is at the center of the oil boom in this part of the country. We stopped in at the U-Haul Moving and Storage of Minot to re-check our trailer and learn a bit more about the oil boom. Opinions are certainly mixed about the merits of the current boom, but one thing is clear; a lot of people are moving to North Dakota to fill all of the jobs that the oil industry has created. The state has not been able to catch up yet. That means that housing is harder to come by, and in some areas you will have to pay much more for a home than you would in most parts of the country.

Leaving Minot we went to Bismarck, the capitol of North Dakota, stopping at U-Haul Moving and Storage of Bismarck. There we head the same story. Unemployment is very low, rents are going up, and people are moving in, with all of the good and bad that comes from a huge influx of people. Moving on to Dickinson we personally felt the influx of people. On a Tuesday night, all of the hotel rooms were booked by oil workers who move from place to place in the state. We had to make our way to Bowman, ND to find ourselves a room.

Where Will We Go Next?

Tomorrow will be a day to put some miles on our odometer. We will be making our way from Bowman down into South Dakota. We have our sites set on that great icon of America, Mt. Rushmore, so keep an eye out for us on the roads. As a reminder if you see us out on the road, snap a picture of us and share it on Instagram using #uhaulroadtrip! From there you will be entered to win one of the limited edition U-Haul camper shirts you see us wearing. Be sure to follow @gouhaul on Twitter as well to keep up with our trip.
