There’s nothing more refreshing than coming home from a long summer day at work and taking a nice refreshing dip in your very own pool! While that image is very relaxing, there are some things to consider before moving into a house with a pool. Pools require daily maintenance and can be costly if not taken care of well. Here are some things to think about when moving into a house with a pool:
Renting a Home with a Pool
If you are renting you will want to make sure that the maintenance of the pool is addressed in the lease. It can be a lot of work for the tenant to take on so it is usually in the best interest of both parties for the owner to take care of the pool. That way if the tenant has never taken care of a pool, their lack of knowledge doesn’t cause the pool’s condition to go south.
Buying a Home with a Pool
If you are the owner of the pool, here are some tips for when you first move in:
- Call a pool company to inspect the pool and the filtering system. If it’s an older pool, the motor and filter could be starting to fail and that could be very costly.
- Check the surface of the pool. If you see plaster peeling or any dark stains, that is a red flag. Resurfacing a pool can also be costly.
- If you are just learning how to take care of a pool for the first time, take a sample of your water to your nearest pool supply store. Most stores will test the water for free and tell you what chemicals you’ll need. They can also tell you the amount of chemicals you will need to keep your water crystal clean.
- Even if you have hired a pool company to do regular maintenance on your pool, be sure to at least skim it as soon as possible after a big storm. The longer you leave it, the costlier its clean up could be.
If you are considering buying a home with a pool, make sure to have a pool professional check it out before you seal the deal. If restoring the pool is going to be costly, that is something you want to know before settling on a price.
