So you’ve decided to move to the big city of New Orleans! Famous for Mardi Gras, cuisine, and music (it is the birthplace of jazz, after all), New Orleans is bound to be a cultural experience no matter where you are from. Before you pack up your moving truck, be sure to know what to expect before moving to New Orleans.
Choosing the Equipment
Most times when moving to a large city, renting a smaller moving van or pickup truck is recommended so that it is easier to maneuver throughout the city and find parking. If you are moving to the suburbs, you can still get away with renting a larger moving truck because the streets are much more spacious.
Where to Live
In 1980 the city was divided into 13 regions with 72 neighborhoods. Some of the most popular neighborhoods include the French, Spanish, African, and Creole neighborhoods. New Orleans is a city of many cultures, and the historical districts and architecture reflects that. The French Quarter is a particularly trendy and high-scale neighborhood boasting the traditional New Orleans-style home. It is the oldest neighborhood in the city and has some of the best restaurants in the country! The Marigny is also a very popular neighborhood for young people because of it’s proximity to many bars and because many of its residents are single. The bar scene is a little more laid back here, and it makes for a great place to live!
When to Move
There is always something happening in New Orleans, so be sure to plan ahead to avoid traffic jams. Mardis Gras and Jazz Fest, in February and April, respectively, attract many tourists to the area so try to avoid moving during these times. Also, hurricanes are common to the New Orleans area and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. You can’t always plan around a hurricane, but take this into consideration if moving on a tight schedule. The summer months can also be humid and moving in extreme humidity isn’t always fun. Your best option is to move in the winter!
